Facebook Ads - Desktop, mobile or sidebar?

Ever realize that some ad placements in FB might cost more than others?

I just found

Know Your Facebook Ad Rates: CPM and Cost Per Page Like by Placement - Jon Loomer Digital

and found this:

It now costs me 45 times more to reach users in the desktop News Feed and 50 times more to reach users on mobile than the sidebar. In other words, the ratio remained steady for mobile News Feed vs. sidebar, but price of desktop News Feed has increased.

So end result - it costs this person a lot more to reach users now than last year.

Have you ever considered ad placement when using FB?

Jon has posted good information on his website for his own ad campaigns and address an important issue of placement that many advertisers are not aware of. My thoughts on placement based on hundreds of clients with millions in ad spend are:

Desktop newsfeed for web sales, web traffic, and page likes.
Mobile newsfeed for app installs, web traffic, and page likes.
Sidebar for global page like campaigns and remarketing.

The fact is that you have to test all of the placement methods against each other nearly every time to see which is actually the best except. Jon shows his cost per like was fairly close in all cases which is common for page like objectives. For sales however the results skew drastically towards the desktop newsfeed.

The bottom line is that assuming you don't know but that you can find out usually works the best.

Everyone is different. There's different industries and markets that work well with sidebar and don't with newsfeed and vice versa.

Many people have said that sidebar ads don't work for sales conversions. We're in 3 different markets that we advertise on the sidebar very successfully with low CPC and CPS's. Newsfeed works as well for those markets for us however, the cost is higher, but generally get a higher percent of conversions for us. So they both work.

Mobile and desktop work for us as well. Mobile has given us plenty of sales on our mobile optimized sales funnels and checkout pages.

So for everyone, test it... test it all.
