Gaining fans and sales from Targetted Facebook Ads

I have been using facebook ads now for a short while, and targeting my audience by the niche I am in. I.e. if I sold green tea, I would target my audience by those who liked green teas in England and USA (Biggest markets)
The ads always work great when paid for, and I always choose topics which I feel deserve to be looked at by many, but would not reach many people if I did not pay for it.
However, the amount of people who like my next post (not using ads) is considerably lower. I realise this is because the former was paid for, but the whole reason you use ads is to get fans to stay with you on future posts.
Is this the same for all of you? Would it be better to use an ad for 'page likes' rather than page engagements? My fear is having 3,000 more fans, but none of them ever interested in actually buying anything from my store.
Any tips would be most appreciated.
