You need to get a following first. Do you have a product you plan to market?

Start following people, start "favoriting" and RT other people's tweets and try to tweet something original at least 2 or 3 times a day. In six months, you should be getting some real momentum. Simple as that.

Twitter is the worst social network to attempt to sell anything on. No one on Twitter is anywhere near their wallet. The best thing you can do with Twitter is build your list. Tweet 2-3 times a day with something original and helpful inside your niche. Use Twitter's tools to target your audience. Namely Twitter search. Just type in your keywords and follow people. 10-15 per week while you keep Tweeting. 1-2 times per week, Retweet something helpful from the people you follow. When someone follows you back, welcome them with a Tweet. NOT a Direct Message. You can set this up for free using a service like Track your twitter unfollowers | Unfollowers.me

Once you have close to 1000 followers, start Tweeting a link to your Squeeze Page every 3-4 days while still doing everything above. I can almost guarantee you, that in spite of anything you do, you will not be able to sell on Twitter. I know it sounds crappy, but I speak from experience. Build your list, give them something free to sign up for your list...then sell.

Out of all the Social Media accounts, Twitter is the worse for marketing. You will need a really huge following in order to make some serious cash (I'm talking more than 100,000 REAL followers).

The amount of tweets that someone receives is so big, that they barely get to see what you write. I have a Fitness related profile with more than 6,000 real followers, and even if I write something interesting (a quote or an image) it barely gets 5 retweets and 5 favorites. When I send people to a link, I barely get 10 clicks.

So imagine how many followers you need to have in order to get thousands of clicks and hopefully make a few hundred dollars a month.

It's not very difficult. Share information relevant to your niche and use # hashtags to reach your audience.

A mistake that a lot of marketers make is to post about their own content too much. You really want to keep it to a 1:5 ratio or you will lose subscribers.

For every 1 tweet about your own content, tweet about other people 5 times. This may seem counterintuitive, but remember what Twitter is. It's a platform from which you can instantly report relevant information to your audience. They DONT care about you or your product. Your value to them is relative to how much you improve their life. That means providing them with useful information, even if you won't benefit directly from it.

100 receptive, interested followers is infinitely more valuable than 100,000 followers who ignore your tweets.

On the whole, you get what you pay for.

Be engaging. It will take some time, but interact with other users and follow them, tweet content they will find useful. Twitter isn't the easiest social tool to market with keep in mind.

I've set up several Twitter accounts, and one thing I did was gain a few followers every day just by following others and using hashtags. I've also used legitimate services (ones that done violate Twitter TOS) that help me gain new followers. Gradual is better than sudden because this SM site frowns on instant surges of followings -- makes them suspicious of spam.

Take advantage of using the # when ever you make a post so people can find what you are tweeting about.
