What are the most important social networks for your niche?

I have 3 websites in the travel/tourism niche with the main income coming from affiliate links.

I've done minimal social network development, mostly because I find the big networks hard to get a decent following on.

I've got a couple of hundred followers on tumblr and pinterest respectively. These networks are really easy to gain followers fast and they often share and like posts, but hardly ever click through to the website.

I've got minimal following on facebook/twitter and I'm unsure how responsive they would be to my niche anyway.

What are your experiences with social networks for your niche, which ones are easiest to build up and which ones convert best?

My suggestion would be to find a couple of gurus in the field who are active on Facebook or Twitter. Somebody like Rick Steves (if he's active) and interact & engage with his followers to leech some of them. You have to come up with stuff to grab their attention, not trying to sell them. Maybe two or three posts a day and toss out a casual promotion every couple of days.

For making money online, Facebook and YouTube are huge with Twitter helping a lot. Facebook is huge because of the ability to reach people around the world to build an audience and to track conversions with ads. YouTube is great because you can find people early in the buying stage, show them helpful information, and get them to visit your website. Twitter is great for SEO and getting retweets from a targeted audience either free using @ messages on search results or ads targeted to related keywords.

Tumblr and Pinterest are ideal for your niche since it relies heavily on visuals. Twitter and FB might be useful, possibly to highlight current or upcoming events/festivals in various locations.
