Hash tags are used to bring together posts of the same topic. Like what was trending on twitter in the past on the Selfie Olympics. If you search #SelfieOlympics all users who used that hashtag in their tweets will appear. It's categorizing posts of the same topic/content/idea.

But most people don't really know how to use it. I've come across an instance in a big storm in my country and a certain hash tag was announced to be used for those who needed rescue as it was more convenient for most to reach those in need of help but when you select that hash tag all you see are kids taking selfies while going through the ordeal and it overshadowed the people who actually needed help.

Topics started off by companies need hashtags for them to go viral. Think of it as some kind of slogan/tagline of the event you are trying to promote. Celebrities use them to gauge their fandom's loyalty and following and Companies use them to monitor activity of their customer's reactions.

So yes, they are a big deal if you are doing SMO.

Hey,

From my experience, the use of hashtags does not improve your traffic to your posts on a social media network. Mainly, they are used to group a number of your posts in the same category.

Other than fun way to entertain your audience by using relevant words, I really don't see any benefit that hashtags will have on traffic. Really, it is something that everyone has been doing, once the big names started doing it.

Furthermore, here is an article that actually gives some helpful tips on how you should use them if you decide to.

Well Josh... Your point of view and your experience both are correct. By using a hash-tag you can not increase your traffic. if someone search using the same word on Facebook than there is a chance to saw your post in the search results.

Hashtags help you to become part of a larger conversation -- which is what Twitter is all about (not driving traffic). For example,if you want to talk about the World Cup, then use #WC2014

Hash tags are a form of categorization. If you want to be a part of a specific conversation, say, the premier of your new favorite show, you can make comments about said show using the show's hashtag and this will connect you with others around the world watching the same thing.

You can also use it to search for qualified leads, I would assume. #mlm or #network marketing or #attractionmarketing would all lead you to people within your niche that you could potentially connect with and talk to.

Hashtags work like tags... Like you create tags in blogs, you use hashtags in twitter. It group all the similar tweets under a common keyword (followed by a hashtag)
