Help me understand facebook ads for people starting out

I'm trying to understand the best route to go with using facebook ads, have I got this assumption right?

Lets pretend im trying to send people to an external opt in page
  • First start with Right column ads so you know whether an ad will perform well and you don't waste money with all the non-relevant interaction clicks you have to pay for when using news feed ads (likes, comments etc).
  • Use these clicks to test your opt in page and also test the facebook ads.
  • Tweak until you have both the external page and ads performing well, split test etc.
  • ONLY WHEN you have a decent CTR and Conversion Ratio should you broaden your reach on facebook ads by including News feed ads.

Is this right?

Answer: True. But you can make profit even with news feed ads. Simply create an fan page and promote it via news feed ads and it will cost less. Then promote to your fan page.

    Thanks

yes that is the one thing i noticed from using News feed ads, even though i did not get many 'website clicks' I did gain 30+ facebook page likes so it certainly wasn't money wasted.

Recently I started going for News feed ONLY. It's getting WAY much more CTR and pushes your CPC down

The news feed ads are definitely worth testing initially as they have a far greater selling power due to the larger image and increased text.

just remember that a HUGE percentage of people are on their mobile checking Facebook all day - and those right column ads do not show up at all. Newsfeed does.

So depending on who you are targeting, you may be missing out on some great impressions =)

test away and you will see the clicks and quality of likes
