[BIG NEWS] Facebook Has Banned Likes-For-Content

FYI for my fellow internet marketers.

Yesterday, Facebook tweaked its Platform Policies, and while some of the changes are subtle, there's one which is very welcome: from now, the concept of offering access to apps or content in return for Likes is banned.

Straight outta the mouth of Zuckerberg & Co., the new rule reads like this:

You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app's Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.

We certainly think it'll benefit people. The changes have to be put in place by developers by November 5 2014. That gives them 90 days.

Makes sense in FB's line of thinking, this was going to happen sooner or later no matter what, it really does not benefit them ($$$ wise) to allow this to continue.

So no more content lockers.. what about using the lockers on downloadable files?

If the person likes the post, and wants to download a PDF it shouldn't be a problem for them to actually "like" it, right?

Or is that plugin just sketchy with the new policies?

I can think of like 20 companies that will completely fold due to this change.

I really feel for those plugin makers that have based their business on this technology and are now up s#$% creek

Its pretty clear that ANY incentive to Like a page to get extra content or opt into contests is banned now.

And, even so, there will be page owners who try to find a way around the rules. And, the only way they might get found out is if another page owner happens to realize what they are doing is wrong and reports it as the average Facebook user won't really know the difference and will just keep clicking that like button to unlock content.

Thanks for the notice. Now I have to go burn all my marketing material. So FB just wants everyone to pay them for likes only. Then pay them more money if you actually want your posts to show up at the top of your fans' news feeds. Money is the only thing that is driving this change. People can always unlike a page if they are only liking to get access to content.

But I'm also confused. What's the difference between offering rewards for liking or like-gating apps versus like-gating to enter a promotion? So I can't have Like to get access to a coupon, but I can have Like for a chance to win a coupon???
