I think FB just murdered a lot of your cool apps...

Now, I saw THIS recent article...

Facebook Bans The "Like Gate;" Pages Have 90 Days To Comply

Doesn't that mean the hundreds of dollars we spent on FB apps that "force" things to go viral,
has just been flushed down the toilet?

I'll try to list some of them here later.

Seems the FB golden goose, just got that much less golden, no?

PS: Doesn't that also mean a bunch of gurus will have a lot FEWER things to sell to us - many of their
products will suddenly be unusable? Dr. B. A. -- M.C. -- M.T. -- N.N. and others.

These are definitely some big changes and a lot of marketers are going to have to change their entire business model.

I'm not upset about either of these changes. From a users standpoint, I hate clicking through to a gated site and being forced to like a page just to see the content. A gate that forces a like usually results in me leaving the page and never visiting the site again. I've always wondered whether gated sites would get more likes if they weren't gated and offered killer content, but I suppose marketers have probably tested their sites both ways.

If a site's content is good enough, users will hit the like button of their own accord. I prefer a page full of people who like my page because they chose to like it, not because they were forced into hitting like to see something I've placed behind a gate.

Like gates just get in the way. At least that's what I'd like to believe.

Requiring people to Google or FB like stuff obviously won't be accepted in the future. I mean, come on, think about it. Google and others essentially want the information there for free. They don't want anything that "spoils" someone's experience. Now, that doesn't make it easy for someone trying to market/sell, but that is the way things are going.

We've never used any 'gate' style Facebook technologies.... So no tears shed here.

If you are 'forcing' your message down users' throats... Try inviting them to have a wonderful experience with your content and then over-delivering.

It works wonders! And we are getting as low as $.07 engagements and ~$.20 subscribers without it... So for anyone thinking this 'matters' know that proper marketing still reigns supreme.

That's exactly right...As long as you provide great content that people crave, there's no need to gate your content. The engagement, the likes and the subscribers will come in droves.

I must agree that you do not have to force people to like your page. As business owner, it is good to have few likes from people who really actually like your content/page and not from people who are just forced to like it.

If this thing is going to stay, I might as well just have my own blog site and focus on getting traffic there.

Like gates are just another way to manipulate users into 'liking' the content, even when they don't really love it. If you can't get real likes, then the content is just not good enough. And, no tricks in the world will make it good. Facebook is just finally closing this loophole to make it more fair for all.

Like gates indeed pumps the page likes counter, but if you look at the future influence of the content been publish and/or promoted by the page you'll find it useless.
