Rule 2.3 revision suggestion

Rule 2.3 reads as follows

Posting must add value to the relevant discussion. To thank someone for a contribution use the 'thanks' button or upvote the discussion.
I understand the intent of this rule, but a strict enforcement could actually be a detriment to the forum.

Maybe it should read something along the lines of

Posting must add value to the forum (or community... whatever phrase you think is most appropriate).

I have been a part of a lot of different forums, marketing and otherwise. Some of the most useful and/or enjoyable threads I have ever participated in went off in several different directions. Strict enforcement of the rule could stifle what would be a lot of otherwise useful discussions.

Of course it makes sense in cases where someone tries to completely derail a thread or with the spam bots that post something stupid and totally off topic because they picked up one relevant keyword. However, to just totally delete every post that is not strictly about the original post in a thread, might not be the best idea.

Thoughts anyone?

I think the rule is more for people that post "Thanks, Great Info" not so much when the post gets a bit off topic

The exception will be for all the articles getting posted and then the new people that come to the thread to tell the OP how brilliant they are

I agree, and that was my interpretation of the rule when I first read it. It was simply to cut down on the silly one-liners.

I have seen others interpreting it as meaning that the posts in a thread must all be on the same topic and that straying off topic, irregardless of the quality of the post, is not allowed.

So maybe just some clarification on the rule is needed.
