Reading the forum on an Ipad

There is a small issue when reading the forum threads on an IPad and that is once the thread opens it does either two things

Thread opens start to read and page goes all white and back to the thread titles

Same will happen if you go to reply to a thread page goes white and back the threads most annoying

There area lot of these little issues that seem to keep popping up.

None of them on their own are catastrophic, but all together they are at best a minor annoyance, and at worst, driving visitors away.

Although I'm sure the tech people are doing their best, it seems like whenever something is fixed, other issues pop up.

I'm wondering if instead of constantly plugging fingers in the dam, maybe it is time to move to a new platform. I'm assuming the forum is still run on vBulletin (although heavily, heavily modded). There was a time when vBulletin was the standard-bearer for forum software, but it has become a bit of a dinosaur.

There are more modern platforms out there today that might suit the forum better, and not have these constant little bugs.

Sometimes you have to tear it all down to build it back up.

The dinosaur that still controls a vast plurality of the web market share.

Forum Software technologies Web Usage Statistics

Switching platforms would be a very bold move, not losing much would be a difficult undertaking to say the least. For Freelancer to undertake this at a time of traffic decline seems to be a bit of a bridge too far, IMO.

Sure. And at one time MySpace still held a huge marketshare advantage over Facebook.

I'm just saying that instead of constantly adding more duct tape and superglue, maybe it is time to move on. Or maybe it is time to start with a fresh install of vBulletin.

It just feels like as soon as one problem is addressed, others pop up.

    Thank you for reporting this.

Are you using the modern style in viewing threads? And what browser are you using?

And you don't think it's going to take a lot of duct tape and superglue to migrate this forum, it's posts, it's users and it's features to a new platform? How long will it take to work those bugs out?

VBulletin still controls 45% of the market.... Facebook had basically completed it's plunge by the end of 2011.

I get your drift, but the apples and oranges MySpace/Facebook comparison is not applicable, IMO.

It's generally not that hard. The only hard part really will be writing the coding to keep the look and feel of the place fairly similar.

All the popular forum platforms today have importers that let you convert all your posts, users, etc. from one platform to another pretty easily.

Maybe there are reasons converting is not a good idea. I don't know enough about the backend of this site right now.

The things that are breaking though generally seem to be very, very basic features.

Some of the customizations have broken the intended features of the software or perhaps the software is broken in and of itself.

For example, you haven't been able to sort threads properly in some subforums for years. Likewise, it's impossible to even browse some subforums, such as the WSO forum, and have the posts show up in date order. I can't imagine that all these guys are bumping their threads but could be wrong.

My worries are if Freelancer tries anything drastic--> more search engine ranks, forum features, and posts may be lost. Sure, lots of stuff is broken, but has FL proven a capacity to build a new forum (and then migrate a very old one) and make it work better?

    I dunno about that...

They could always do it on a test forum to see how the process works out.

That would be a project of epic proportions...I would like to see that one from the inside...beta, alpha, or otherwise.
