My Trip to the Dark Side AKA the "Modern" View

I'll play along for a little bit. Not sure how long I'll last until I go into convulsions (already feeling queasy).

Here is a "follow me" as I try to make sense of this.

1. I know what my name is. I also know what I look like so I don't need a profile picture on the upper right to remind me. Reasoning for this feature?

2. I can't see but a few of the forums on the forum dropdown. I can't arrow down or use a mouse to scroll down.

3. When I was typing queasy above I originally misspelt it. Grammarly popped up and when I closed that window my post was gone - nowhere to be seen. I figured I would have to start again and so clicked the what do you want to discuss (title) box and the window with my post came back. It's good it came back but it's bad it totally disappeared.

4. I go to the first thread. There was a post 18 minutes ago. But even though I'm scrolling back and forth I can't find the most recent post. What am I missing? Do I have to click on every reply in the thread?

Added to OP:

5. Looking the most recent threads, we have this order from the top: 5 minutes ago, 1 minute ago. Where I was raised 1 minute ago would be more recent than 5 minutes ago. But maybe I've been wrong all this time.

Update on #5. It is sorted correctly currently. I didn't think to get a screenshot at the time.

6. The automatic subscription for thread openers ignores the settings in our control panel.

More to come, I'm sure.

Even though I've temporarily changed my preference to see the view from Satan, when I click on the WF logo link in the top left of the black bar, I go to the classic front page view. Confusing!

On the All Topics page when I click Most Recent I don't see the thread that I just barely started. Why wouldn't it show there?

My 2nd reply shows before my first reply on the list of replies for the thread. That seems backwards to me.

I was going to bring all my replies into the OP but I found out I can't delete my own posts.

I've got 4 replies made by myself on the thread list (OP at the top) but it shows that there is one reply. Is that right?

And furthermore, it ain't got no good English because it says "1 replies".

    Hey Mark.
Can you post a screenshot so we can discuss it to our engineers?

Sure I'll see what I can do after a couple doses of courage. I had to leave the feed because I was afraid I was about to have a stroke.

This shows that the posts in the suggestion forum aren't included in recent posts even with all topics chosen.

Why not have the engineers follow the steps Mark described and see what they come up with?

I realize now just how much I use the profile info with join date, etc. on the normal/sane/classic view. With the feed I have to spend a couple clicks to get the same info.

Update: apparently in mobile feed view that info isn't available at all. Thumbs down.

That was a very early design decision made about three years ago, just after the takeover. Someone had decided to replace the perfectly serviceable set with the current ones. The color contrasts and feature placements are such that one can't always understand the true intent, (e.g., ""), and in some cases, they're barely visible at all, (e.g., ""). I wonder how much money was wasted on that decision.

This is the most annoying to me. Sometimes a thread will go on for pages in the classic view. With 50 posts per page that is a lot of posts. If it is a thread that I am following I can just note what post I left off at and continue from there the next time I visit. But, in the modern view. If someone replies directly to someone else the only way to see that comment is to read every post again.

Another point I would like to bring up. Freelancers reason for the modern view is that it shows well on mobile devices. While this might be true, it does not seem to me as people are participating via mobile devices. If they were, then we would be seeing text speech. i.e. instead of "how are you" we would see "how r u"

Thanks for all the feedback Mark, we've got a list going and we'll address a number of these issues next week.

Also I know you guys aren't fans of the modern view, but if you could please keep the feedback constructive, that would be much appreciated.

If I'm on a thread, the only way to get back to anywhere (such as the main feed page) is through the drop down menu we're all complaining about.

I'm not sure what was there before the menu was put in place, but it seems that there would be a link on the page to go elsewhere.

Is the Top Voted by Day/Week/Month not sorted properly or does it work another way? It doesn't seem to be sorting the right way since you may have something voted 45 times up top, then 39, 44, 5, 15, etc.

All Topics (Forums box on right sidebar) doesn't include all topics.

For example, it doesn't seem to include the WSO area, Suggestion forum, etc.

Speaking of drop down boxes, Quora has a drop down box when you hover over a member's name so that you don't necessarily have to go to their profile to get basic info when you're viewing a thread.

yep. We've seen this and its actually a great way to keep things compact and available on demand. We'll probably do it sometime in the future when the backlog clears up unless we figure out something better.

The thing with hover/drag effects is that they.do.not.work.on.mobile.

I just noticed that if you click on links to other member's profiles that have posted in this thread, it actually goes to my profile.

    Can someone else test this?

Okay, it's not happening here now. When I posted, everyone of the other member's links pointed to mine. I discovered this by clicking on the Overseer's link and went to my own profile.

Are the top threads really what we want them to be?

Looking at the first couple pages here are a few that stand out:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-services.html What exactly is so top about this thread - no matter who voted for it?

http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...ntact-her.html While these threads are fun, and I take part in them sometimes, is that what we want to show the world as a top voted thread on the #1 marketing forum?

    http://www.warriorforum.com/off-topi...irlfriend.html Same as above

http://www.warriorforum.com/search-e...ommenting.html This is a prime example of the opposite of quality. Most of those comments should have been (and still should be) deleted. They add no value, don't help anyone, and are basically useless. One or two posts would have answered the question just fine.

Many of the top voted threads are top. Many aren't. Maybe you can look at tweaking your formula or something to take into consideration newbies (that wouldn't know top if it bit them on the face), offtopic, etc.

Top threads are not manipulated or tweaked by an algorithm. They just are the most top voted by users over the selected time period. We don't decide what is the top thread, warrior forum users do
