I find the view parent reply function highly annoying. It ruins the flow. If I want to know what someone is referring to I have to jump upthread to read the original post and then scroll back down. I ain't got time fo' dat.

Between this and The Feed, it seems like FL is actively trying to make it more difficult to actually read this forum. Whatever metrics and/or statistics you guys are using that are telling you to take the forum in this direction are gravely erroneous.

Even more - the "view parent reply" DOESN'T WORK.

I just posted in answer to a link spammer who bumped a 2011 thread....

The forum added a "view parent reply" that linked my post back to a post made in 2011. How stupid is that?

I've been exiting more and more threads where the "vpr" is in every post - not worth the effort to see what people are trying to talk about.

I don't understand how anyone 'in charge' can look at that 'function' and think "it's working". I guess it's anything to make the "feed view" work?

I don't understand how there are VPR links before there was a feed (pre-2016) and where the post doesn't quote an earlier post. How do they know which post was replying to which post?

However, they say they are working on a more permanent solution so give them a chance to get it going. Hopefully, it's fixed soon.

Mark, there's an excellent permanent solution. It's called "quotes" and has been used on forums for decades.

(I know you understand this, but I don't think FL does...)

That's the reality - they don't know which post is replying to which post.

The VPR is inserted into almost anything I post - and I USE quotes. Twice today I've made a post and when published it has "view parent reply" that links back to posts made YEARS ago.

Yes, I know they are "working on it" - but for how long? Apparently it's not a priority and I don't think FL realizes the damage it's doing to the forum. I don't believe it's necessary to destroy the classic view usability in order to provide a good mobile ready view.

Funny that the spammers pushing their own new websites ("I just found this - it's great) and their own affiliate links (here is my Fiverr page)...or bumping 2012 threads - don't seem to include the 'view parent reply'.

Seems user experience isn't even a consideration any more.

It's like this forum has devolved into a showcase for some developer's fancy to practice implementing features that nobody wants, needs or appreciates. More importantly, it seems none of these features lead to an improved user experience, is not increasing traffic, and certainly is not increasing participation in discussions.

I suspect all these changes are just activity to justify the existence of a programmer's job.

It's a shame really, because this is a marketing forum and it would be awesome if there was a marketing goal behind the changes. Sadly it seems more like that rearranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic as it began to sink.

Has anyone ever thought to ask "what is the goal of this change?" And, did they ever think to test the change as a temporary implementation that could easily be reverted if it did not meet a worthwhile marketing goal?

It seems once a major change has been committed, no matter how much it negatively effects the user experience that change is kept, there is never an admission that the change was a mistake, or a test that didn't work out. It's always, "sorry, we'll try to improve it in the future, but get used to it because it's staying no matter how awful it makes the user experience." What kind of thinking is that? It is not good development practice and certainly not a good marketing practice. That's my opinion.
