I don't want to open up another can of worms discussion on whether the constant flood of repetitive threads by newbies that keeps clogging up the boards on WF is right or wrong. What I'd like to do is put forward an idea that could largely solve the problem.

You know the script. You log-on for a session and the main board is littered with the same newbie questions that have been repeated the day before, and the day before that, and the day . . . .

It ruins the whole WF experience for many and I personally know of two long term members who hardly use the forum any more because of this, with one of them having told me that: "It's morphed into a kind of kindergarten".

I do fully understand both sides of the equation and appreciate that we all had to start somewhere. Newbies want to learn and ask questions, whilst a lot of longer term members find the repetitiveness vexing to say the least. It's easy to say pass by the thread, but it's annoying scrolling up and down to find half decent threads, especially if you're only on for a brief visit.

Experienced members know that the answers to almost all of the "basic" newbie questions can be found simply by using the search button on the menu bar, going "advanced", and entering the keywords for your search term in the first box (using search titles only). The problem is that most newbies don't read the rules, don't know where the search box is, don't read all the stickies because there are loads of them, and are so overly excited at becoming a WF member that they head straight for the "new thread" button.

So if putting a sticky at the top of a forum doesn't work what will?

The answer is to have something above the Main Internet Marketing Discussion Forum on the forum listing board. Another forum or whatever. It should be boldly headed with something like: NEWBIES - Use This Before You Post Anywhere!

When clicked it would take you to a links page that could say along the lines of:

BEFORE Starting a New Thread Visit These Links For Answers To Common Questions

Camtasia
Fiverr Questions
Free Traffic Ideas
Kindle Help
Wordpress - What You Need To Know

The links simply take them to the search results. The above are only a few examples and perhaps the top 50 questions could be alphabetically listed, or as many as is necessary. These would just be the most common and basic of questions but what a difference it could make.

This will not only encourage newbies to continue to use the search facility but they will be wowed at the wealth of knowledge available on WF, from day one. This will stimulate better discussions as slightly more advanced questions will be asked, learning will be achieved quicker, and it results in better relationships between members as it closes the gap a little on knowledge levels.

I'm certain newbies would benefit enormously if this were provided, and the WF boards would receive a huge boost in post count levels as novices felt better equipped to pose somewhat more demanding questions to further their fledgling IM career.

I agree with your post; so many new threads would never have been created had the person just typed keywords in the search bar lol. But apparently not everyone thinks to do that...

    1. The whole point of a forum is for people to ask questions and discuss things. I think you would find if you got rid of all the daily 'technical support' type threads from this forum, the forum activity would die along with it. These threads are what keeps the forum active on a daily basis and it's what a lot of new members come here for.

    2. How many times have you read a thread on a topic that has been discussed before but someone else happened to post in the new thread and share a new perspective or a new tip. It happens all the time. You can't just say there is already a thread about how to do this so everyone should just read that. It defeats the purpose of a forum. By having the same ideas discussed many times over we all learn new things and new ideas come about.

    3. Very few people like taking advice from a thread that is dated weeks, months or even years ago.

    4. The topic of this thread has been discussed many times over as well. Does that mean I should just link you to those threads?

Will, I think you're missing the point I'm making. I said it would apply to only the most basic of questions, which don't need answering over and over again.

It's very narrow minded to think that forum activity would die simply because some newbies were able to find answers to common questions faster than creating a thread. Remember, it's paid membership now and I doubt anyone is going to pay just to walk away after having one or two questions answered promptly.

New members come here for information. In what manner they get that information is irrelevant. Knowing the answer to a common question on the bottom rung of learning will only encourage new members to move on to questions regarding the next rung of learning - which will probably be a new thread created.

I really can't see how you can say that as the results from a WF search include not just old threads but even today's threads, so any "new perspective" or "tip" is obviously included. I don't know whether links to them would become outdated but even if that were the case then it's no more than an hour's work a week to update them.

Surely you can't be so blinkered as to believe that waiting several days to get the full response to a new thread is better than seeing all the replies to multiple threads on the subject straight away.

Again, I remind you that I'm only talking about the most basic of newbie questions here.

You're entitled to your opinion of course and like I said, I'm not looking to open a can of worms discussion here. I honestly believe that something along these lines is what WF and WF newbies have needed for a long time.

A basic FAQ might be good enough so that the newbies will be able to get most of their queries answered before posting in the forums. But I do agree with WillR that it is the basic daily activities that keep this forum going.

The interesting thing is that although there might be 2 different threads discussing about the same topic, I still learn different things from the 2 thread. So I personally think that the forum is still functioning well. Just my 2 cents

What makes WF awesome is that all types of users are here. It is democratic. It is open. It is a relatively free arena for asking for help and sharing solutions. Looking down on newbs or flaming newbs is looked down upon. I like that. Because we're all newbs ins

Keep it the way it is.

If people don't like the personality of the board, they can always find a forum that matches the forum 'vibe' they are looking for. That's why OPEN and FREE markets are great

The idea won`t work just because the newbies aren`t newbies at all, they just want to make some posts, and because they haven`t got ideas, they just repeat the same questions over and over, not one will ever read the answers because they already know... it`s just SEO - kind of
