Customer value optimization means maximizing your business’s total customer value by first locating your best customers and then maximizing their value. McDonald’s and Starbucks have been using this system to capture the coffee and hamburger markets, and Amazon for dominating ecommerce.

This system works for all types of businesses, big and small, whether you sell traditional products, services or digital products and follow the aspect of the law of business presented by the legendary marketer Jay Abraham.

Customer value optimization believes that a business grows in these three ways:

By increasing the:

- number of customers
- customer’s average transaction value
- customer’s number of transactions

How to implement customer value optimization

Just learning new tactics like Facebook Advertising, Twitter and Google Analytics is not enough. You also need to implement the CVO process or it’s a waste of time and money. It’s also no use to just understand PPC advertising or search engine optimization. You need to know how to apply these traffic strategies to the CVO process to reap its profits.

The CVO system comprises of the following steps:

i. Determining the right market/product

ii. Choosing a traffic source

iii. Offering a lead magnet

iv. Offering a tripwire

v. Offering a core product

vii. Creating the return path

1- Determining the right product/market

Nothing is more important than choosing the right market to have a group of willing and competent buyers. No luck and work helps without a willing and able market. To build a business around a market, you need to determine if the market is big enough and is monetizable.

To find out if the market is big enough, look for:

- Active blogs, Facebook pages, forums, email newsletters and associations.
- More than 30,000 Google searches every month for your top 3 keywords

To ensure the market is monetizable, look for:

- Advertisers as popular advertisers mean money
- Direct competition
- Indirect competition selling something different to the same market
- Gurus -influential people associated with your market
- Affiliate offers found in Clickbank, Commission Junction and Share-A-Sale
- Ecommerce sites that sell products to this market

As these are all rules of thumb even if you don’t find any active forum, or your keywords do not add to 30,000+, you may still have a viable market. The more of these criteria your market meets, the higher the possibility of success.

2-Choosing a traffic source

The first thing you need to know is that you do not have a traffic problem as Google, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn all work to send you targeted traffic. Even your search engine optimization agency aims to send you more traffic. You just need to know how to measure the worth of this traffic and how to extract the traffic’s maximum immediate value to drive prospects into the CVO funnel.

This can be done by mastering a single, steady traffic source. Once you stay focused on this traffic source and master it, you can add a second and third traffic source. The traffic source options you have include email marketing, blogging, social advertising like Facebook, twitter, YouTube ads, etc., organic social media, SEO and banner advertising. Though this costs money, remember that those who spend the most money to acquire customers win.

3- Offering a Lead Magnet

Once you have driven visitors into the CVO funnel, you need to concentrate on the Lead Magnet. This is an irresistible bribe that you offer to a prospect in exchange for contact information. It is usually the first transaction you have with them with money changing hands.

This Lead Magnet should be of tremendous value, and is usually offered on the landing or squeeze page, optimized to convert even cold traffic into leads. The landing page need not be fancy, but should be able to increase leads.

You are paid dividends throughout the remaining system by increasing opt-ins in the Lead Magnet. In fact, the more leads generated through the Lead Magnet, the more Tripwire offers you make.

4- Offering a Tripwire

While the Lead Magnet only helped you generate leads and not customers, you need to offer a Tripwire to these leads to get customers. Tripwires are affordable offers ranging between $1 and $20 and can reach $500 in expensive product and services markets.

Tripwires help convert a prospect to a customer by providing the leads with an irresistible offer. The best way to make an irresistible Tripwire is by selling it at a break even price, or at a loss to you. You don’t make a living selling Tripwire offers, but use it to acquire a valuable list of buyers.

Based on the CVO process, the Tripwire Offer is the single most powerful addition you can make to your business even if there’s no profit. The strategy to follow is to convert the maximum number of Lead Magnets into paying customers. By acquiring these paying customers, you generate some profit through the steps Core offer, Profit Maximizer and Return Path.

5-Offering a Core Product

After increasing the number of customers, you need to concentrate on increasing a customer’s average transaction value. Your flagship product is your Core Product here. While you go nowhere making Core Offers to cold prospects, your sales explode with the addition of the Lead Magnet and Tripwire Offers.

The Core Offer sales may or may not make you profitable. However, you needn’t worry about the CVO process, as you can take everything acquired from the Core Offer to reinvest and acquire more customers.

Build a system and spend more to acquire more customers than your competitors. While your competitors make a Core Offer and try to make a living from it, you don’t need to make a dime from it.

Instead, spend more on traffic acquisition, conversion rate optimization or to increase your value offers. Though this incurs additional expenses, it’s worth it. In fact, many worldwide successful businesses do not make any profit until they reach the next two stages, Profit Maximizers and Return Path.

6-Offering a Profit Maximizer

The Profit Maximizer increases the average transaction value per customer. Unlike yourself, many businesses struggle without Tripwire Offers and Profit Maximizers. They live and die selling cold prospects on their Core Offer.

For example, McDonald’s makes practically nothing on hamburgers. It’s their Core Offer, and they build Golden Arches with the fry and Coke Profit Maximizer. Similarly, Best Buy sells their Core Offers of laptops and plasma TVs on irresistible margins to compensate with their Profit Maximizers warranties, installation and Geek Squad support. You too need to set up your Profit Maximizer like a club or membership site, which will enhance your Core Offer.

7- Creating the Return Path

The last way to grow your business is by increasing the customers’ number of transactions using strategic and frequent communication to compel them to buy repeatedly. This is possible through the contact information acquired through the Lead Magnet.

If required, you can offer more Lead Magnets, Tripwires, Core Offers and Profit Maximizers to achieve this. You also use email and content marketing, organic social media, ad retargeting and custom audiences to maintain communication with customers and increase transaction frequency.
