Common Boomerang Effects of Wrongly Executed Retargeting Campaign

Another common effect of retargeting overexposure to products is that they develop what has been commonly referred to as banner blindness. Once people who were meant to be potential clients elicit such reactions to a product or service then you know that your marketing campaigns went terribly wrong.

So what should you do?

1. Applying a frequency cap

It serves to limit the frequency your ads reach a particular tagged visitor. In particular, it is recommended that you limit this number so that it does not exceed 20 times each month. You should also bear in mind that visitors to your site will be at different points in the possible purchase journey. Therefore, when you use a blanket strategy to retarget everyone in the same way, you lose out on a lot of potential customers.

2. Burn code

Another twist to wrongly executed retargeting scenario is when you continue targeting a customer even after they have purchased your service or product. This is utterly annoying. Well, I know that many of you may have been caught in that trap not because you did not figure out that that could happen, but because you, perhaps, didn’t know how to discriminate such clients from those still on the purchasing journey. Now you have a chance to stop the bad marketing practice. There is a snippet referred to as burn pixel or burn code. This is a code you need to put on your page for post transactions. It works by untagging the users who have already purchased your product. Consequently, the system will stop serving them with ads of the products they already purchased. Burn code stops the possible annoyance of your customers and saves you money. Figure out a scenario where a customer is being pursued to subscribe to a study course that they have already joined! There is something better to do with such clients. You could offer referral gifts, return discounts or up-sell by introducing new products to them.

3. Segment your audience

We already mentioned that your web visitors are usually at different stages of product purchase. Therefore you cannot possibly use the same marketing techniques to win them over. Some of them are simply seeking to know about products in a given niche; note that they may sometimes not even know what they want. Audience segmentation ensures that you custom make your ads so that they remain relevant to the recipients.

5. Using View through conversion windows

This is an effective tool in improving your brand awareness among your target audience. Although a lot of statistics suggest that display advertising is not as effective as paid searches, the data from such statistics has been shown by other studies to tell half the real story. In a study by comScore, it was shown that retargeted ads help lift the brand image and awareness by a huge percentage. In their study, the research firm found that such ads (retargeted) increased product awareness for up to 1046% in actual product searches. What more evidence do you need that retargeting helps boost your brand presence? View through conversion reckons the fact that some ads do not trigger immediate sales. However, they can influence such a move at a later date. This strategy is also known as the billboard effect. This is because online displays create an impression you can remember at a later date. In fact the strategy provides great feedback to advertisers because they get to know the number of conversions that occur in specific windows. A 24 hour monitoring setting for view through conversion window is ideal. They also provide further data to advertizers including the quality of ads, and the shopping habits of your target audience.

6. Single provider retargeting

Campaigns done using several providers in retargeting can turn disastrous sometimes. Multiple retargeting providers compete for the same space to place your ads. This triggers the cost to go higher. Moreover, the scenario reduces the chances that each of them grabs to serve your ads to users. The other difficulty multiple retargeting providers approach poses is that managing frequency caps will be hard. This is because each of the providers operates independently. You should take a month to run tests and decide on best campaign for your brand.

7. Rotating creatives + A/B Testing

Avoid running the same set of creative’s for months on end. One retarget study showed that click rates reduce by 50% after a series of the same creatives running on a website. A/B testing campaigns inform you on how to run your campaigns with high performance ads. A/B testing helps you avoid guess work by running a series of tests and deciding on the ones that work. 8. Optimized creatives

Make beautiful ads. Banner ads are likely to play a big role in your success rate. Avoid cramming everything in minute spaces on web pages. If you do so, you lose the essence of banner advertising; capturing users’ attention. You banner should be simple, recognizable and smartly branded.
