Do you struggle with the whole concept of storytelling? Tell someone they have to tell a story to a crowded room of strangers, and, if you’re like me, you break out into a cold sweat. What will people think if we tell it badly, or if we don’t know how to hold their attention? And even worse, what if we can’t get the listeners or readers to do what we want them to do? Then, storytelling becomes a complete waste of time and you’re probably embarrassed too. What if we knew someone who could show you a 7-step process for creating a story that works every time from small events that happened to you just this morning? Are you already thinking? “I don’t know any stories.” “My stories aren’t interesting.” “Nothing ever happens to me that others would want to read about.” That’s what I thought too until my friend, and master storyteller, David Perdew revealed a few of his secrets to me. Luckily, he’s agreed to do the same for you in a special presentation for us on Telling Stories with a Point on… Dec 17, 2015 2PM EST NOTE: This webinar was first hosted on Dec 17th at 2pm EST. Listen, I could tell you how important – and easy - it is to master storytelling, but I think I’ll let David tell you… with a story. He sent this to me recently. If you’re as old as I am, you may remember that ancient AT&T commercial about reaching out and touching someone… with long distance, of course. (Does anyone use long distance anymore?) Successful storytellers everywhere are still reaching out and touching someone every day. And there’s a real trick to doing it without being cheesy. Expose yourself! Hold on, before you run away, give me a second to explain. Making a connection is one of the key five attributes of getting results with good stories. Remember, when telling a story, you want your reader to: 1) Listen 2) Connect 3) Engage 4) Act 5) Retain Now, what’s that about exposing yourself? In 1995, my wife (at the time) not so politely asked me to leave. I spent the next 3 months couch-surfing. I called it homeless since I was living out of my SUV. With $11 in my pocket, $256,000 in unsecured debt and no prospect of a place to live or a job, I hid. It was time that I needed just to figure out what was next. Now, in those three paragraphs, I’ve told you something painful and important about my life. It hasn’t always been perfect, but it’s pretty good now. Those words are a way of getting a little vulnerable with you. The story is real. At this point, one of three things will happen: 1. Someone who shared his “story” repulses you and you’re probably gone already. 2. You identify with my trouble because you’ve had troubles too. You may even be a little hopeful. 3. You’re intrigued. There’s more to that story and you’re curious about the details. Use this technique. Open up. Tell your audience something that might be a little uncomfortable. If you can’t tell on yourself a little, you’ll have a tougher time relating to your audience. Join us for the rest of the story in our presentation: Telling Stories with a Point.
