I've personally used press releases for my niche sites and they brought up the rankings of my keywords. My clients have also received some Google love after they've submitted their press releases. For example, we wrote a press release for a brand new site and it was on the first page within 24 hours of submission. So yes, they do help in SEO.

Whether a press release remains in the search engine depends on which submission service you use. To my knowledge, some submission sites keep the press release for a limited time before removing it from their site.

PR Web, for example, keeps their press releases forever. So, if you submit your press release to them, it'll stay on Google for a very long time.
