eCommerce & POD Journey - Case study from 0 to $5000 monthly

Hello Everyone,

I've been thinking of starting this a while ago just hadn't had time to fully commit to the journey.

This thread will cover a 3 months case study that will showcase the work we did on one POD store built on Shopify.

The case study will be recorded and edited to show the most important part and then will be uploaded online here after the period ends.

We won't show the website URL since we're still going to work on it in the future, but we will share everything else.

No actions were done to the store, it will be built in 3 days along with all different social pages and accounts needed.

We're going to use Facebook advertising campaigns to drive traffic and conversions to the website and we will set some re-targeting campaigns on Google Adwords. Aside from that Fb will be the only advertising platform.

The plan:

This won't be our first store but the focus will be on all resources and techniques to make money without investing a fortune, each step will be detailed and will include the total budget so you still get an idea on our profit & expenses figures. So we're going to use mostly free or cheap tools all along.

The store will be a general shop with multiple sub-niches that are going to be taken from the targeting interests, let me explain:

Usually people will go directly with pre chosen niches and then try to design shirts, we don't do that. Our first step will be a detailed niches & audiences research, here is how generally it goes:

  • 1- Studying multiple niches & sub niches to find the most shared designs. We're going to use audience insights, Google, Pinterest, Ig and pretty much all the resources that can give an idea of what are the trendy designs.
  • 2- We create similar designs after estimating the buying level of each interest targeted. This will help us lower our testing costs.
  • 3- We advertise our apparels to the proper audiences and start our testing from there.

Each step of the ones above has multiple mini steps within that we're going to cover as we move forward. Don't worry, everything will be explained in basic so you can recreate similar results.

Here is what you can expect to learn if you follow this case study:
  1. Audience & niche research.
  2. Targeting the right audience.
  3. Creating apparels designs to sell.
  4. Business automation.
  5. Growing & Scaling your results.
I will try to answer the questions in less than 48 (sometimes sooner than that).

02/15/2019: Tasks
  1. Creating the store structure (no products at this point).
  2. Adding all the important apps & pages.
  3. Starting the audience research.

Next update: 02/17/2019
Days till the case study ends: 90 days

Welcome everyone!

    Update 1:

    Website design:

Got a domain name that has the word tees in it. We'll have it a general store with different categories that will be the same sub-niches/Interests.

We decided to go with a premium theme called Elessi and most of the website is done right now.

Teescape & Teelaunch apps were the ones that we're going to use due to the low cost and the easy integration.

We will focus more on the product page and the mobile layout since we're be limiting our targeting to device/mobile.

We've got some designs ideas that we're going to tweak to suit the advertising.

    Audience & Niche research:

Till now we picked 4 sub-niches in the lifestyle category, they were:

    1- Military
    2- Skulls & Gothic
3- Retired Nurses (can be narrowed with age)
    4- Bohemian

Each sub-niche has a total of 20 related ad sets with average total audience size of 5 millions per each sub-niche.

We analyzed each of the 4 categories on social networks, competitors sites, local researches, related brands products, hottest related terms items and other sources and we picked around 40 designs spread over. We're going to create our own designs based on the ones we gathered from our research and advertise them to the audience we've got.

    New Tasks:
    1. Creating around 30 designs.
    2. Adding the products and making 3 apparels (T-shirts, Sweaters & Hoodies).
    3. Start building the social accounts and adding some content.

Excellent job! Personal accountability is the key to success.
I'm trying something like that with a mentor/colleague friend who is also on a journey like this. We meet once a week and give each other updates on our progress and plans for the coming week. What's good is that it is a tiny bit competitive since we seem to be trying to outdo each other. Really seems to move us along.

Keep it going and never fail to perform a task on a consistent basis. Hopefully this journey will give you some insights.

      Good luck!

        Fun to watch!

Too bad we can't be more liberal with links to our work.

Question: Is the POD for art a good market? Always wanted to to try that. If it can go on a tee it can go on a mug, wall print etc; right?

You can always get a signature and put the link there. Nothing is stopping you from doing that.

Yes, that will be included as well.

Sorry everyone didn't update the thread and that was due to the designs being due to deliver. Everything is fine now.

Will update again in Monday because we went ahead and completed a few more steps on the way.

Till now we have a completely made website along with 57 designs ready to use. We're currently building our checkout funnel that will help increasing the average order value. This will help us determine which upsells funnel is working so we start working on scaling early.

      Stay tuned!

Sounds like a great program that will get you where you want to go!

I think the most important thing it succeeding is persistence. I have found that to be so in my own case, and recommend that you keep going on your path. You will definitely make it.

It's also very helpful to have a mentor or someone that can hold you accountable to your commitment to succeed. Feedback and encouragement from a trusted friend is very helpful.

    Good luck!!
