Hey Jake,

I sent you an email to your gmail account, and a PM. I want to hire someone to write articles for me. I explained it more fully in the email. I want someone to write for me for at lest a month, hopefully continuously. But I will pay for the first month and see how it goes. Please respond.

I am interested in your new software. If you can send me details on that too, I would appreciate it.

Hello Jake,
I have sent several emails to both of your email addresses and have not received a reply. Must assume you have been busy with wedding plans.
This is concerning my request for changing to part time SEO/Content VA.
Could you please respond to my request at my gmail?
Thank you,

hey guys, here an attempt to give a balanced review after trying out 2 different
SEO "experts" over the last month:

ok, to begin with, Jake himself is very good, great to communicate with. highly recommended.

the first guy I got was -- from my perspective -- too inexperienced, didn't really understand SEO, didn't really use SENuke as intended and worst of all, whenver confused, never got back to me, but instead went off collecting backlinks all day long. I don't need random backlinks, I need nice little juice link-magnets set up in SENuke, but that was a little beyond him. Ok, I could've spent a lot of time training him up, but the project (an affiliate promotion with impending launch) called for instant action.

So, asked Jake to give me someone more experienced, preferably someone who could do both SEO and spinning (I provide 1 article, he then spins and creates all the content for the article submission, the mini-linkwheels etc). Although generally better than the first guy, once again the same thing: when he didn't know what next to do (and all too often that did not mean there was nothing to do, he simply ignored all the instructions in my emails, especially the ones with words like "urgent", "critical", "NOW", "asap" in it and then got back to me after me asking 3 times with "oh, I didn't know you wanted this done now"), this guy too went off to default mode which was collecting random backlinks. All part of a good SEO strategy, however NOT useful when you need your page ranked at #1 because the launch is NOW.

the spinning quality was unusable, I had to re-do it myself.

[UPDATE: ....man, I'm pissed off] And where I didn't it probably screwed up the rankings. I mean, hello, we are optimizing the article for "product launch formula" and then this guy spins it into "Merchandise Start Method" or "Product Establish Method" etc.
just discovered this, so I'm in a mind to ask for a refund. What the ....??? What kind of SEO expert are you to screw up this badly... Jake, please send me a refund, this really ticks me off!
if you don't believe me, here's some of his handy-work:
http://flo6yd4horn.blogetery.com/201...vice-launches/
http://floydhorn427.vox.com/library/...-launches.html

ok, I give up. Don't even read the rest of my original post.

the next thing is: I couldn't talk to these guys. Apparently no headsets, then headset broken, too noisy in the office, skype down, can't re-install etc etc etc.
the 2nd guy only way to communicate was through email which sometimes he read often, other times not so often.

so, overall: my 'fault' was to assume that they had real SENuke experience and could shift between long-term strategy (lots of backlinks) to actually using the full power of SENuke, which is setting up networks of Web2.0 sites that leave no footprint.
I could've trained the 2nd guy, and if my business moves in that direction, I may even go back and continue with him, but, for now, backlinking I can get done by software and the time I spent telling him over and over again what to do and to do it NOW would've been better invested firing up my copy of SENuke, quickly install the network I know would get the job done, and be done with it. Was it worth the $300 I invested in that month? nope, definitely would've been better off getting a $300 mass-backlinking tool for the same effect and less hassle.

summary: based on my personal experience with 2 guys which is of course not representative of all workers that work for Jake, I'd say they have potential, but they're certainly not SEO experts who can take the ball and run with it. If you go with them, be prepared to invest quite a bit of time into training them and you have to be on the ball and regularly ask for updates ... like today I only asked once, which clearly wasn't enough, so I didn't get my end of week update.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I have to say that this is out of the ordinary. I have hired three different people through Jake and while I don't find them to be perfect, they all have done a good jub for me, and probably better than I could do for myself. none of my stuff has been too complicated though. I am waiting on Jake to let me know he has a writer available right now.

Veit
Hello Veit,

We understand and we really apologize for the problem you have. Just a quick explanation,

Veit asked us to build 300 or more backlinks, a day. The SEO gave him 500 links a day at minimum, so you don't expect the guy to have time spinning the article and doing other stuff since he needs lots and lots of links. He spinned the article using "the best spinner". Next off, the guy did manage to hit the #1 spot over 1 week using his other keywords, and now its sitting on the 1st page. Look at this keywords:

product launch formula 3.0 bonus
product launch formula 3 bonus

..and still he was happy and said he needed more backlinks.

And as you said

"All part of a good SEO strategy, however NOT useful when you need your page ranked at #1 because the launch is NOW."

SEO does not work that way, if your launch is NOW you could have given us at least a month or more before to work on your campaign.

If we miss some instructions, we are sorry. Man, we are just human we can also make mistakes. We are trying to give the best value for your $75 a week. They know their stuff, but if you give them too much work then they have no choice but to also give up quality. We wanted quality more than quantity, but you asked our SEO guys to do more.

We are happy to send you a refund if you could have emailed me, we could have discussed this and work it out. Anyway, this is you decision to post in our thread, we will be happy to answer you as well.

Thank you,

Jake

Hey guys, (readers and Jake)

just to clarify a few points -- and no, no intention to turn this into a flame war.

1) like I said, Jake is on the ball, a real pleasure to work with
2) I guess I was unlucky with these 2 particular workers
3) Jake, honestly, my initial version of this post was 'balanced', when I then checked a few results and found he's messed up pretty much all the keywords, I was pissed off. Still am. The value of those backlinks is close to 'junk', as Google now has no idea what the articles are about. That is a big massive f***-up!
4) it isn't quite right that I asked them for more and more. I have told them repeatedly that I want very specific things (like link-magnets, the backlink booster setup, etc) implemented and that I was NOT interested in MORE backlinks. I even used words like "critical", "stop", "asap" to get them to stop and focus on the important. I know you weren't in the loop until right at the end, so if required I can back this up with plenty of emails where I ask them to STOP backlinking and start doing what I asked them to do.
5) regarding the ranking, hell yeah we were/are at #1, that's after me seeing that they weren't doing their job and then spending the weekend doing it myself manually and using tools and other outsourcers on oDesk.

let's get back to calm: my view based on this experience is this: the 2 guys I had were not as experienced as I had hoped (so, advice for anyone reading this: expectations have to be managed from both sides) and unfortunately, whenever they weren't clear about what they were supposed to be doing, they went back to default mode which is backlinking. For this project, I didn't have the time to train them up fully (I know you should factor this in, and it's just part of the process). I guess my expectations were a little higher after reading all the great reviews on this thread.

and like I said in the original post, when things are right (i.e. I have a non-urgent project so I have time to train the guy up, and it is someone who communicates without me having to prompt them all the time and they have access to skype and can actually talk to me), I may just give this another go.

My (now calmer;-) advice for anyone thinking of hiring through Jake is to take them on for the trial period, make sure you have a mini-test project that covers *everything* you'll require for them for the next few months and agree on very specific deliverables. Then, if they don't deliver on *exactly* what you ask for, ask Jake to give you someone else.
I know it sounds harsh, but I think that's the biggest mistake I made: I initially asked them to send me a daily report where they tell me
a) what they've done today
b) what went well
c) what didn't go well
d) where they got stuck

and then I didn't 'enforce' it, thinking they'd "get it" after a while and start doing it. And the exact opposite happened: the reporting got sloppier and sloppier to the point where I wasn't getting anything anymore, and then when I asked it was like "oh yeah, I was in the office yesterday, just my skype didn't work. Here's what I did".

so, during the test-days: make sure they can actually do *everything* you'll require of them and test if they can follow simple instructions by giving them the instructions to send you specific deliverables. Then do not ask anymore and just see if they deliver consistently. If not, switch to another guy.

Right then, that's probably the biggest lesson I've learned, I hope it helps others who read this, like I said from the beginning Jake is a good (and extremely hard working) guy and (like I also said) if there is a way to make this work, I may even go back to him.

now go and have a fantastic wedding!

Thank you,

Jake

just to clarify a few points -- and no, no intention to turn this into a flame war.

Thanks man. I have no intention of turning this into a flame war as well. Your weekend work cannot justify getting rank #1 on Monday the next week after. The SEO guys worked for almost 3 weeks just to get to that point. You just don't want to wait for the results. Just want to explain our side, we do understand that it really did not work out but for the VA's former client(s), his work was pretty good but I don't want to argue, I guess it's time to move on.

I think this whole thing really came down to the 2 day trial we are offering. Other people may or may not like the VA or the VA's work but we are happy to accept it and we can change the VA until you get someone who you are comfortable to work with. We respect your decisions and want to make sure you are happy and confident with the VA before we move on.

Anyhow, like what Veit said, you can test the VA on his/her first and second day, if you are happy we start billing you on the third day, if not let me know so we can work it out and fix the problem.

Anyhow, good luck on your future endeavors and thank you for testing the service.

Regards,

Jake

I posted a job on oDesk recently and got 20 replies from VA's SEO etc, apart from one applicant, most do not seem to be able to properly read and follow the job description and requirements. Frankly I have wasted so much of my time trying to find a VA that will listen and understand my very simple requirements.

I was thinking of trying out the offer here but after reading posts by VeitSchenk I'm not sure.?

Very interested in a VA to get my business rolling. What all can a VA do and what are the prices?

I need someone to spin articles, post them, build hub pages and squidoos and blogs to link back to money site.

PM me with pricing, etc.

Much appreciated!

What you can do to help weed out the spam is to put a simple question in your proposal like "how much is 2 + 2?" or "Can you see the sun during the day or night?" And then clearly tell them that you will NOT respond to any replies that do not include the correct answer to the question.

Hello Zoro,

I understand. We do have the 2 day trial, so you can test the VA out for 2 full days. Test how he/she works, if he/she understands your simple directions. If you are still hesitate please email me or PM me so we can discuss what we can offer.

Cheers,

Jake

Hello,

Sent you a PM. As for everyone, we don't have Writers available. We only have SEO VA's and Web Developer/Designer VA's.

Thank you,

We don't have Magento Developers. For all who inquired, I will be away tomorrow, July 9 until July 10, 2010. But you can still email me but I will be able to reply by July 11.
