My personal opinion of the validators is that these are an ideal to aim for.

If these things really had any bearing on anything that really counted then a huge percentage of sites on the web would be considered useless, worthless or whatever.

When all is said and done I am interested in whether it does the job and does it well.

I currently do not have a mobile device and need to rely on mobile simulators. I feel comfortable with the actual building of the sites, but because I'm just starting to build mobile sites...I'm a bit apprehensive about how well these sites will perform in the real world on actual mobile devices.

I know once I have more experience with building these type of sites I will have more confidence in the final product I'm creating for my clients. But until then I would like to know...

1. What simulators (other than the one in the EzMobile plugin) would you recommend if you were in my position?

2. Are the page load times in a simulator a fairly accurate representation of how fast the pages will load on a mobile device?

Thanks everyone,
CO

Another question...

I'm creating a mobile site (using EzMobile) for a client that will require about 20 regular pages (i.e home, about, sales, service, & etc) plus about 20 different email addresses. As for images (outside of menu icons & etc) it will probably be no more than 6 total...

In regards to the mail addresses I'm thinking I can either just list the addresses as links (mailto:blah@blahblah[dot]com) or I could make it so they open up a "contact form" that would link to the individual's email... <--which would result creating a different page for each contact form.

Are both of these methods okay to incorporate into a mobile site, or would one of these method be better suited for mobile sites?

I really kind of like the "contact form" method but am unsure if having 20 contact for pages would be a bit much for mobile site of this size.

Is there another method I might want to consider using to achieve this matter?

Also how many pages could a mobile site have before it starts to become too heavy, so to speak?

Thanks,
CO

Wow! That's a big undertaking for your first mobile site with this plugin. I don't know what type of business you are building this for, what you are charging, or what you promised/sold so my comments will be very general. Generally speaking mobile sites will not have that many pages. They usually have fewer pages (less information) than the main site because the mindset of a mobile user is a little different than your desktop user. A desktop user will visit a site more for research purposes whereas a mobile user will visit more for NEED purposes (to take ACTION).

Reading from your previous comments, that you don't own a smartphone, it may be harder for you to understand this point. After a mobile smartphone user begins using their phone for a while and the "newness" of the device wears off they tend to realize the limitations of their phone, like the the screen is too small, the connection is too slow, the ability to type is challenging, etc... All of these issues are reasons why you are building the mobile site in the first place. I could be wrong, but the last thing you want to do is replicate the desktop experience on a mobile device. What you want to provide the user with is the basic information (particularly if its a local business) to make a transactions with you THAT day.

I've heard a quote that nearly 80% of people who search for a local business on a mobile device do business with them the same day they search. Therefore, the pertinent information, in my opinion, would be Business Name, Address (tap for directions), Phone number (click to call) - (Probably All Three of these on Homepage). A page with a brief description of products or services and Click to Call. Maybe page with Pictures and Click to Call. A Page with Menu items (if restaurant) and Click To Call. Maybe a Page with Events and click to call. A page with Coupons and click to call. And finally a contact page with click to call. Thats maybe 10 pages max and to be honest most business wouldn't need all of that.

Remember, your user is accessing your site on a phone. You want them to use the phone's features as quickly as possible to close the sale or to get to your business. Giving them too much information may overcomplicate the SALES process or prevent them from buying from your business quickly.

Of course this strategy is far more useful for local retail establishments. Like I said I have no idea as to the type of site you are developing but it is still some thing for you to keep in mind.

Regarding your question for the contacts page. I would use a dropdown list for the contacts page to select the recipient if I HAD to use all those recipients. EZMSG doesn't offer that feature in its contact form right now so you'd probably use something like these plugins below and insert their shortcode onto one of EZMSG blank pages that you called Contact Us.

WordPress › Contact Form 7 « WordPress Plugins
WordPress › Custom Contact Forms « WordPress Plugins
or
WordPress › FormBuilder « WordPress Plugins

Regarding your questions about Mobile Simulators/Emulators:

1. They are NOT a perfect replication of what you will see on your phone. (for instance a mobile simulator may show flash sites/plugins because you have it installed on your computer but it may not show on many phones.) They will give you a good idea of what it will look like, though. To be certain you have to look at your site from an actual device.

2. There are several mobile emulators you could look at by searching google for Mobile Emulators. Here are a few:

GoMo: An Initiative From Google
Mobile phone emulator (by COWEMO)
Opera Mini simulator
Mobile Emulators and Simulators - The ultimate guide to mobile developers | Mobile Web Programming

3. Finally mobile emulators are not an accurate representation of a sites load time since you will likely be accessing the site over an ethernet/wifi connection. Mobile phones access sites over Edgge/2g/3g/4g connection which can be considerably slower than ethernet depending upon reception, which is another reason you don't want to load your mobile site up with too much data, too many pictures/video, or have pictures/video at too high of needed resolution (aka big files).

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Legacy3, for an excellent and thoughtful post. In expanding on CuriousOne's question, you have touched on many of the issues both developers and clients face. It's always easiest to say, "Sure, we can do that," when a client wants a beloved feature included in a new project. Sometimes, however, that's not the best choice. It's up to the developer, acting as a knowledgeable consultant, to probe into the requirement a little deeper.

Legacy3 wrote: "... All of these issues are reasons why you are building the mobile site in the first place. ..." All of us need to ask ourselves, why am I building this mobile site? What am I trying to do?

In pondering these points, it's a good idea to keep in mind how and where people typically use their mobile phones. Often, a user will be searching for contact information or directions while riding an escalator or paused in traffic at a stop light. That user will want information that's obvious, easy to find, and concise. As Legacy3 suggests, a mobile user is much more likely to be ready to act immediately or in the near future. A shallow menu structure and obvious, friendly Tap to Call buttons are usually most appropriate.

Regarding mobile emulators, Mac users may install the XCode development environment (**it's a huge download--over a GByte and a half**) free from the Mac App Store. It includes a standalone iPhone emulator that is excellent, but geared strictly to Apple products, of course. The speed concerns Legacy3 mentioned still apply, however. There's no comprehensive substitute for an actual device.

If you're wary of a long-term contract for a smart phone, consider an older version from some place like eBay that you could use for testing over WiFi, or even an iPod Touch (which has WiFi, but no phone capabilities).

Emulators are great, but it's really a good idea to have something you can hold in your hand and show to your clients.

A quick look at Cicolino's source code suggests that he has hard-coded an HTML solution without Wordpress, but has included the EzMSG Javascript and CSS in his files. It also appears that he has plugged in the references to these libraries from his own elements to leverage the features EzMSG provides. An interesting hybrid, in my opinion.

Let me suggest however, if you're considering that route, EzMSG may not be your best choice. jQuery Mobile is a fully-featured and free solution that provides a coder with the tools needed to build an impressive mobile site using HTML code in an editor. Of course, this is a far cry from "push button computing."

I'm following your instruction on adding a coupon to a page. To change the coupon's colours you say to make these changes in the Theme css. Question: Will these colour changes also affect other pages and other coupons?

Wow! I don't know why anyone would want a refund. I especially can't understand why anyone would want to flame Irene. This is one of the best plugins ever for wordpress and one of very few options in the mobile marketing arena. This plugin is very well thought out and it works well! Plus, its getting better by the day very different (in a good way) than what was originally released.

As far as Irene's responsiveness is concerned, just look at the last 19 pages of this thread! She has been very helpful while continuing to improve the product. Have there been times when she wasn't available on the forum? Sure, but thats when she's developing the product or providing one-on-one support. For less than $40 you couldn't possibly ask for anything more as far as support goes.

Jim, of course you are entitled to a refund if it fall within her policy but trying to destroy her rep when she's gone above and beyond and trying to paint her as a bad warrior is a complete mischaracterization.

You know how everyone keeps saying that WordPress is too slow for mobile? I wonder how many have actually used a good caching plugin with their "slower" WP sites.

I recently added the Quick Cache Plugin to my Mobile Site generator install and I'm seeing practically instant page loads once the site has been initially cached. Have any of you guys tried the same thing and gotten similar results? If so, what are you using?

I tried setting up WP Super Cache at first but wasn't getting the results I expected. I heard good things about W3 Total Cache but it wouldn't work with my recent WPMU install. I finally installed Quick Cache, set it up, and BAM!

Cache-ing is cool for multi/returning users, but remember our smartphones hold little memory (dumb phones not so much}, asking it to hold too much will have the reverse effect. I think if the plugin can be selective in what pages should be cached is a better solution. Select just a couple, like Home, Products or Optin.

Hi Irene, if I missed the answer earlier I apologize. I have read most of the 19 pages of comments but may have overlooked the one I was looking for: Question: how best to use this in affiliate marketing and adsense marketing? In other words how can I link back thru my blog/site TO the affiliate site in the cleanest most efficient way? thanks!

However, the caching plugins I suggested specialize in server side caching. In other words they take all the dynamic data from the database and turn it into essentially an HTML file so that when a visitor hits your site Wordpress doesn't have to make a call to the database to get the latest info for your viewer to see.

Of course there are limitations to this technology:
1. Your client/viewer may see outdated information (if you just updated the site).
2. The first viewer to your sites fresh content will have to wait longer than the subsequent users because they are triggering the cache plugin to save new data.

You can minimize some of these effects by adjusting your caching times and enabling "auto caching" which will refresh the cache at set interval whether a user visits the site or not. After the initial install of a website it shouldn't be too much of a problem anyway since most websites we are talking about won't change all that frequently (maybe a couple times a week max but probably per month).
Nice post Legacy3!

I will put the plugin into action and test it out!

Thank you.

I purchased this wso a while back and love it, I highly recommend it for anyone looking to easily & quickly create wp based mobile sites.

Quite frankly this product, in my opinion, is far superior to similar products that sells for hundreds more! My only regret is that knowing about it sooner would have saved me several hundreds of dollars.

The awesome flexibility this product offers, allows me to create some truly great looking customized/personalized mobile sites without being limited by the product's available themes such as the case in other wp mobile site products I've seen & tried.

The excellent "over the shoulder type" short training videos Irene provides covers, in detail, every aspect needed to quickly learn and apply this plugin's awesome power. The tutorial video she recently provided on creating a demo pizza site from start to finish really helped to nicely tie all the info provided in the topical training videos.

Considering Irene is handling "everything" herself (coding all the required updates due to rapid never ending internet changes, customer add-on requests, & support)... I'm very happy with the customer support she has provided me and thou I too wait with baited breath for new updates I can appreciate just how taxing this can be and am willing to cut her some slack when she is running behind schedule on releasing her updates. I just hope she doesn't burn herself out and is able to provide this level of dedication without it effecting her health.

Irene thanks for your all your hard work & dedication on providing such a superb product & support at an excellent price!

Can you add graphics to the table for like a menu. Or can you add any type of paypal buy now button to put on a product page rather than redirect to amazon?

Let me know as I would really like to buy.

I fully agree. I am seriously starting to think something has happened to her health wise given no contact over several days and no status update on the update. Hope I am wrong.

I have a couple of VERY important questions....can someone...anyone please help!

i have onlline Amazon affiliates that want their current affiliate Wordpress websites to be mobile friendly. Some of their pages are 800 to 1500 words per page.

1. How can I use EZMobileGenerator for these affiliate websites?
2. How to structure long affiliate product reviews with EZMobileGenerator?

Thank you.

Irene...I truly hope all is well.
Like the rest, I'm beginning to worry. I truly hope that all is OK!
For the money that we all spent, and for the value that you delivered, I believe we all got more than we bargained for.
The price that we paid for your product, far exceeded our expectations.
Let's us know you're well.
Up-dates, be dammed!!
Think of this if you will.. You're like the Good Shepard, and the flock is lost.

Lets forget about updates, WSO's, EasyMobileSiteGenerator and the like.

Please let us know you're alright Irene!

Anyone that has visited this thread since it's inception, knows very well how passionate you are about this (EZMG) and all your products - you've never been absent for more than a couple days on occasion.

I hope all is well sunnygal and look forward to your next post!

I've just read through the EzFanpageGenerator thread and I hate to say it but this looks like a case of, to quote Yogi Berra, "...déjà vu all over again".

In that instance Irene vanished for months on end!!

I don't think I can trust the safety of my client's sites and my reputation with Irene's attitude to back up and support.

Imagine a major change in WP that requires an update in EZMSG and there's no Irene around!! What would you say to clients?

I appreciate the same risk is there with anything of this nature but with Irene's track record being what it is it's not one I'm willing to take with her products.

Even if she reappeared, yours and your clients sites could have been down for whatever period she was not around.

For me, it's irresponsible to run something like this if, for whatever reason, you're unable to maintain swift and reliable support.

Yes, it certainly is a worry. I would'nt know how to fix any WP issues that might arise in future. I did not know that she has a history of vanishing for months on end. I do hope Irene is OK.

You can work with WP 3.2.1 or 3.3 for next then years if you want, no need to update. EZMSG works great on both versions, no problems.

I have Mymobilesitegenerator from CCStudio, no answers on support ticket..after 3 or 4 updates still no working click to call button on iPhone, and they take yearly membership for support ?!?

Hello everyone.

I for one am being patient, and hoping Irene is OK. Maybe she's bedridden with the flu or something??? She is a human being! And with the amount of work and support that she POURS into this project day after day, it wouldn't surprise me that she has ended up sick and temporarily out of action.

Or maybe some other personal emergency has presented itself in her life, and she had to drop the project for the moment. Lots of things can and do happen in one's life folks!

Let's all be patient.... Wishing you all the best Irene, and a big thanks for everything so far....

I agree in hoping that everything is ok but at the same time, if she is logged in wouldn't it be a good thing to at least leave an update on the state of play.

Yes I fully agree. She has been online today and yesterday. How difficult it is to post a quick message. And yes, this is exactly what happened with her fan page generator wso. Very disappointing and poor business practice if this is now the same case.

I don't know if this is the case or not, but it is possible to stay logged in for days at a time without actually being present on the forum/thread.

Anyways, not gonna speculate...just hope she's ok.

Her last post on this thread was 1/6/2012 as far as I can see. I also see she posted on the EZFanPageGenerator thread on 1/7/2012 saying there was an update to that product due out at the end of the following week.

Assuming she was also working on an update for the EZMSG product, is it possible she's stretched too thin and has to cut communication for a period of time in the interest of catching up?

I also checked out the thread history for EZMapGenerator. That thread seems to follow the same process - a flurry of work after launch to correct problems and satisfy requests, stabilization of the product, followed by a period of silence, followed ultimately by an updated release.

Managing all her products must take a considerable amount of time and effort and if she's doing the development (I don't know if that's the case) she must have to manage her time carefully.

I, for one, think that the product is of good quality, especially for the price ($46.80 last time I looked). After the launch and stabilization (it looks stable to me at this point), how much should you expect to receive for that price?

I've learned to not be critical (and most of you haven't been) until everything is known. I will wait to see what happens.

As much as I would like to see some upgrades (and would be willing to pay for the ones that I'd like to see), if it happens that this is all there is, I think I've had my value.

I sent 2 support tickets in too for some issues with the main plugin. Seems the click to call feature isn't working properly and there is now no way to clone templates!

In fact the only way that any of the features work right is with a previous install where I created a custom theme. Now all the themes that come with the product do not function properly it seems.

Anyone else try creating a new site in the last few days and experience this?

I hope Irene is ok and can update us at least...

Ok I figured out the problem I was having. Apparently all the themes in the Theme section were set to "Scheduled" in the publishing section. So they weren't live for some reason. I just "Published" them and now things are working again...weird. Maybe that happened with the last update or something?

Hi Ray,

Since you are so quick to judge without knowing the facts... let's put the shoe on the other foot! Most here run their own business from A-Z by themselves or maybe with the support of a spouse. Most don't have the luxury of full blown support departments, a full staff of salespeople, programmers, etc. and whatever else would be nice to have in running a business.

Maybe you do and you feel special? Nothing lasts forever... I've bought tons of WSOs... most software is updated for a year or two and then the people just let it die a slow death. There is always a bell curve to any product sales and support cycle. BTW, Irene has always fully supported her products as needed.

As Cicolino said... this plugin works great with WP 3.2.1 and 3.3.1 You bought the plugin based on current features and it works currently with the latest WP versions. End of story!

You were never promised lifetime upgrades and lifetime support so why would you expect it??? BTW, Irene has always provided support and upgrades... but it's never been promised...

For you to make accusatory remarks without merit is well... just plain irresponsible of YOU!!! And yes before you start referencing the FanPage generator thread (which I also own and use...) I did everything possible to contact her and even reach out to her past business partners.

She didn't disappear from that thread on purpose... she was hospitalized for a period of time. I'm not going into details but when it's that serious... the last thing you are thinking about is logging in to the WF so you can update a thread!!!

What happens to your customers if you got into a tragic accident? Is someone going to be worrying about you or should they immediately go around to all of your customers and maintain your business for you? Does anyone even know how to maintain your customer base if you were gone? I have no idea who you are or what type of operations you run... I'm just saying Irene is a one person show and you need to think of it from that perspective. She has never represented herself any different or stated so.

For you to accuse her of being irresponsible without knowing any facts is wrong... plain and simple! Please get a refund and leave the thread if you have concerns (which are unfounded). None of my sites that I have built with this plugin have ever been down and all of my customers are happy with the end product. Just because she isn't around doesn't mean my sites go down...

We all paid money for a plugin that builds mobile websites. It works as stated. Peiod. End of story. Anything extra is icing on the cake but can't be expected (for various programming reasons) just because we ask for it. Nor does it require her to be here posting daily updates on her plugin. Code programming is not an add a feature in a day or two type of project!

She could be programming or maybe something has happened with her health again or a million other reasons why she's not responding. As stated by others she has many other products to maintain and support and there are only so many hours in a day...

I have every confidence that she will be back

I just sent support an email. I rec'd an email on the 10th advising that an update would be sent out on the 11th. I will post the response here.

Here is that email I rec'd on the 10th. The update would contain some important features:

The update for EzMobileSiteGenerator which was due to be issued yesterday had to be delayed, because I discovered that Wordpress had changed something in how permalinks were handled in Wordpress 3.3 compared to all previous versions of Wordpress.

Because of this, the solution that I had developed for removing the /ezmb from the permalinks, needed to be redesigned to work with Wordpress 3.3 and 3.3.1 as well as all previous versions.

I completed that redesign late yesterday, and have finished all the testing this morning. I will be doing the documentation and accompanying videos during today, and will release the update tomorrow for everyone.
