Maybe I missed something in the setup videos or in this thread - your help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance....
Yes, you can do that.

You use the redirection script to forward the mobile-users to the mobile pages.

There's a complete PDF about mobile redirection available on the download page.

Also, I've embedded a YouTube video but it's oversize - if I re-embed at a smaller size that won't work for iPads/tablets.

Is there an auto-resize script to fit the device window?

Thanks Mo

When I play back YouTube videos on my iPhone or iPad, its YouTube who automatically sizes it for my particular screen. Size your Video frame for the the smaller device and users with larger devices can enlarge the video to whatever screen size they are using with the fill screen option.

Here's something else to consider: As a user of both devices I generally do not want to see a Mobile site on my iPad. I prefer to see a full web page (as long at its not flash enabled when I have to switch to a paid app called Photon Flash Browser). I like seeing the desktop version because an entire web page conveniently fits on the iPad and because I'm generally not "on the go" like I am on the iPhone.

My point is that many people will probably opt out of the mobile version from tablet devices to see the desktop version so I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about trying to appease that audience with a mobile version that was meant for the phone. Of course, that's just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Those are good points!

The way I approach this now is to build responsive design sites for clients and use a re-direct to mobile phones. Yes, you can still re-direct a mobile user (screen size user agent redirect) to the mobile version and spare them the page load of the main site on their mobile phones.

Responsive sites are awesome for including the higher end processors that tablets hold. This way we accommodate the mobile user by delivering only the most pertinent of info on the mobile site, and leave all other devices to the main site.

Clients love it and it works well for me too.

I just got the plugin and have been playing around with it and all I can say is Amazing! I can't believe everything you can do with it. I'm still learning, but impressive is an understatement.

And the customer support can't be beat. Usually when you submit a ticket you will hopefully hear back in 2 days. I submitted 2 tickets and Irene got back to me in less than 1 hour!

Great plugin, great support! Definitely a 10 out of 10!!

Thanks Irene!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention - very valid points.

Here's the thing (and I'm new to mobile optimisation) - I'm testing various switching options to auto-detect mobile deices and switch to a mobile site version.

How do I get my sites to differentiate between mobile phone devices and mobile tablet devices?

There are thousands of variations....

and cybercopy - what's this? 'screen size user agent redirect'

As Legacy3 pointed out to you, most mobile phone will actually open a YouTube app and play the video in that app.

Both my Iphone and my Android phone do that. I don't have a Blackberry, so can't coment on those.

Tablets are a different issue. You don't really want to be redirecting a tablet such as an Ipad to a site optimised for a mobile phone. The screen resolution of a tablet is pretty much the same as a normal laptop so you should really just be showing them the normal site.

Most redirection scripts should probably only redirect mobile phones, not tablets such as Ipads.

The scripts that I supply with EzMobileSiteGenerator would not redirect an Ipad, but they would redirect an Iphone.

It looks good and almost identical to the viewing it on the desktop. iPads crop the side (gray) areas so the page show a little sliver of gray (about 10 px) but mostly white from left edge to right edge. That's normal and none of your content is missing (just part of the background).

One other difference...on the iPad I can swipe your slider from left to right with my finger as well as press the buttons beneath the slider.

Hi Irene,

Your WSO looks exceptional. Let me apologize if my questions have been previously answered but with 22 pages on this thread, finding answers can be cumbersome.

10. I view my site by scanning the QRCode and I see adverts at the bottom. How do I get rid of the adverts? I don't want adverts on my site.

The adverts are inside the QRCode Reader's browser and are how the supplier of the QRCode Reader is making money. If a visitor comes to your site via Safari, they will not see adverts.
1. The above quote from you confuses me. Does it mean if I build sites on my mac and use safari there will be no adverts? Or just when do ads appear.

2. I'm new to mobile sites and I am not clear on how I build it yet it appears when someone types in their web address. Do you have a video going over that?

3. Have you added "tap to call" yet?

There are no advertisements in this plugin at all. The quote above was referring to the QR code READER that you or your client might have installed on your mobile device. A QR code READER is a separate app that end users must download from the iTunes App Store or the Android Marketplace. Some are free apps and some are paid apps. The free apps generally show ads at the top or bottom of the app. When a user scans the QR code provided by this plugin or ANY OTHER source the free QR readers will generally show the web page of the mobile site with an ad below or above the site. To see the site as it was truly meant to be seen you must press the 'view in safari' or 'view in web browser' button to transfer the site to your mobile device's default web browser. Some QRcode Reader apps do not display sites within the app at all and will automatically send the URL scanned from the code to your default web browser, therefore completely bypassing any ads.

You should go back and look at the videos on page 1 of this thread. It explains that the EZ Mobile Site Generator is a Wordpress PLUGIN. You must have Wordpress installed on your server, which is where you will install this plugin and build your mobile websites. It doesn't matter if you are on a Mac or a PC since you will access this software via web. The videos on page 1 also show what the sites will look like. Also on page 1 are several QR codes and sites you should view with your phone to get a feel for what the sites can do. (If you use an iPhone a good paid QR code reader called "QuickMark" can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store to view the sites or I'd suggest an app called "QR Reader" if you want to go the free route.)

"Tap To Call" has always been available. It has been a part of this plugin ever since it was released.

This applies only to the redirection of a responsive site.

I use a paid service that combines a variation of the code below and the values for a plethora of mobile devices.
<script type="text/javascript"> <!-- if (screen.width <= 699) { document.location = "mobile.html"; } //--> </script>

The numerical value is the "screen size", so if the device is less than what is specified it will redirect to the url.

Responsive design uses media queries to direct the various screen size of the visiting device to certain pages/urls. So if you redirect a device with a screen size under 481px to the mobile site, all other screen sizes will fall into the media queries of the responsive site.

This way you spare the mobile of loading the entire responsive site.

That's it in a nutshell.

Great, thanks for your answer Legacy.

I know what a QR code is. My reader has never had ads so I didn't realize that some do. I just misunderstood what Irene's message was saying, it sounded like the software generator put ads when it created a code. But I get it now.

I also build websites in Wordpress and I've used many WP plugins.

Early in the thread Irene posted:
No, to tap to call images. I use CSS instead to provide a colored background and user definable text as this reduces the data load requirements. Wherever possible, I've tried to avoid using images to kee it as lightweight as possible. If enough users want a "tap to call" image facility, I can easily add one.
None of the demos show a tap to call image; although you could always tap a phone number, even in a text message.

On my question number 2, I think I figured that out. It's a simple redirect on the customers website to the mobile site. Is that correct?

thanks

Yes that is correct. Irene also provided us with a two redirect scripts in the downloads area. One redirect is for non-wordpress sites and the other is a plugin for wordpress sites. You would install either of these on your clients main site and when a mobile device hits the URL it would display the mobile page you created instead of the desktop version of their site.

I have been waiting for support to answer my questions so I was hoping that someone here will see this and be able to help.

Please assist me with the following as they relate to this plugin:

1. What do you mean when you say setup the plugin on a WordPress blog dashboard? I downloaded WordPress free and tried to install it on a blog and could not find the dashboard to install it on unfortunately.
2. Where does the information from the mobile site reside once you get the plugin installed? How many installations can be installed under the dashboard? How do you get the install over to their hosting to redirect from the main website install preventing them from requiring additional hosting?

Thanks in advance!

Hey, I've been wondering this, too.

I know absolutely n-o-t-h-i-n-g about WordPress and not much even just what it is.

I'm no techie at all. I'm having problems with two programs working together. The mobile site I have on one program will not submit a contact form on my GoDaddy Website Tonight form. GoDaddy will not/cannot help me and the mobile company I'm using will not/cannot help me.

Will this WSO have information about how to make a contact form on a website and make it work with Website Tonight?

Does the mobile site have to be hosted separately?

Thanks

In answer to your Question #1, the dashboard doesn't exist until you install Wordpress. Here are the instructions on how to install Wordpress: Installing WordPress « WordPress Codex - hope that is helpful. In regards to #2, the information resides in the Wordpress database - until the new version with the HTML export function is operational.

I've just bought the product and I'm very impressed! I wanted to ask a quick question: I'm trying to use this to make mobile versions of some WordPress landing pages, and I'd love to be able to use a "reverse redirect." As in, if I allow people to share the URL of the page on Twitter or Facebook, is there a way for it to detect that the visitor is on a traditional computer and redirect them off of the mobile site and to the traditional site?

And on a more general vein, do any of you have any experience trying to add viral elements to a mobile site that you can share?

You don't need a reverse redirect. Send all traffic to your desktop version. Just place the redirect script on the Main site and submit the main sites URL to twitter and facebook. If they come to that site from a desktop computer they will (stay on) get the desktop version and if they come from a mobile device they will (be redirected to) get the mobile version. Additionally, you could place a link at the bottom of each version 'Visit Desktop Site' on mobile version and 'Visit Mobile Site' on desktop version so that users could choose regardless of what device they are using.

Also, keep in mind because EZMSG is a Wordpress plugin you can use most of the other plugins available to regular WP installs especially if they utilize short codes. However, keep in mind that if you place too many plugins on your WP mobile install that it will slow your site's load time down and negatively impact your site's overall performance. How fast a site loads is very important since many users will load your website over Edge and 2G networks and some users pay for data downloads of everything they pull over the net.

2. WordPress › White Label CMS « WordPress Plugins
3. WordPress › User Role Editor « WordPress Plugins

4. WordPress › Peter's Login Redirect « WordPress Plugins

I just found:
5. Plugins - White Label Branding for WordPress Multisite | CodeCanyon
6. Plugins - WordPress Admin Colors & Branding | CodeCanyon

After trying 1-3, I've settled on #1 even though its paid because it has the combined functionality of #2 & #3. Plus, it allows me to export and import my settings so I can setup new sites quickly with my default settings. I may be using #5 soon for my WPMU sites.

#4 allows you to direct specific user types to a certain page within the admin panel like 'Add New Post' immediately upon login. #4 can be used with anyone of these plugins, particularly if they have the of functionality #3.

#6 is a simplified version that seems to do most of what #1 and #5 does via a single options panel. (#1 and #5 have a LOT of options, which can seem overwhelming at first until you realize their power.)

With #1 & #4 I've managed to remove all WP branding, duplicate the looks found at Fluency Admin 3.2 | Forty Seven Robots (which is not compatible with WP 3.3) and direct my end user to only the areas of the administrator panel that I want them to use.
Great info, will look into them for sure.
Thank you.

Will this WSO have information about how to make a contact form on a website and make it work with Website Tonight?

Does the mobile site have to be hosted separately?

Thanks
There's a contact form built-in with EzMobileSiteGenerator. It forwards the message that the user enters into the contact form through to whatever email address you wish.

There's no need for it to have anything to do with your "GoDaddy Website Tonight Contact Form" - you just need an email address to receive the data from the contact form.

There's a complete video in the video tutorials which deals with creating a Contact Form using EzMobileSiteGenerator.

Thanks for helping, Jim.

In regard to the above, it's all operational now. I just have to complete videos and will then issue it.

I hoped to get it out today, but I don't think I'll be finished the videos in time, and I'll be offline most of tomorrow (14th Feb), so I don't want to issue and then be immediately unavailable. So it should go out, either late, late tomorrow, or early Wednesday morning.

I've set up a demo site for someone at nyd.smartmo2.mobi/nyd/

There are a couple of things I need to iron out and can't find the solution

1) I still haven't worked out how to have this site on just the subdomain 'nyd.smartmo2.mobi' (i.e. without the /nyd/ extension)

I've taken a good look through the PDFs and videos and simply may have missed how to do this.

2) The other problem is that the contact form does not fit on the vertical mobile page - it overlaps to the right. I've had the same problem with a couple of other EzMobile sites I've made.

How do I fix this?

Thanks in advance...

How you tested your contact form? on my iPhone looks great, no overlaping.

Just a quick question as I'm a bit confused.
I have my main blog which I'm using to build numerous mobile sites within.
Is it possible to then direct each one individually to their own dot mobi address that I purchase seperately, (without paying for extra hosting ), for each one.
Thanks in advance, Gary.

The way your url is set up (nyd.smartmo2.mobi/nyd/) you can have three instances of wordpress installed. Once in the subdomain (nyd.) in the TLD (smartmo2.mobi) and finally in the /nyd.

FYI - It's not a good idea to create a folder (nyd) with the same name as your subdomain (nyd.)

You will have to install wordpress in the subdomain (nyd.) and the plugin in that wordpress install.

I'm not so sure if EZMG will work correctly if you install the plugin in all three instances of wordpress as described above. Ask Irene (fill out a support ticket).

It will surely work in one!

Hope that helps

thanks Cybercopy

the WP install and plug in is on 'nyd.' only.

the url has '/nyd' only because I don't know how to get the site online any other way.

what I want is a desktop site on domain.com and a mobile site on nyd.domain.com all set to auto switch for mobile phones - I haven't quite worked it out yet!

Will contact Irene...

Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem with my phone and my mobile site. When I bring up my mobile home page on my phone it looks fine, but when I click on the links in the navigation menu, it justs take you back to the home page, no matter which link you click.

Now the strange part is, when I check it on my computer everything works fine, the links are perfect. The links just don't work on my phone.

Just wondering if someone could check it out on their phone as well or if someone can give me a 'heads up' as to what the problem may be.

Jenny,

I tried your site from my desktop computer and my iPhone and I am experiencing the same thing. The desktop goes to your sub-pages while the iPhone only refreshes the homepage.

While visiting your site I noticed that your site is EXTREMELY SLOWWWWWW. I don't know if you are experiencing the same thing or not but that may have an affect on this situation. Your site loads slow over my desktop's LAN connection and even slower over my iPhone's WiFi connection. Quite possibly the iPhone is timing out and just defaulting back to the homepage because its taking too long to call your sub pages up. Is your server always this slow?

You may want to try adding a cache plugin (QuickCache is easiest to install and turn on). After installing the cache, logout, load up all the pages in your desktop first and then try it again from your phone. QuickCache won't cache pages while you are logged in.

Also, try going to your Settings > Permalinks and re-saving that page or changing your permalinks to another option like Post name.

Jenny:

I'll just give you an initial thought and perhaps that will get you started in the right direction. Your permalinks look odd. Irene has recommended using the defaults, and mine come out something like <mainsite>.com/?pbcezmobsite=qwerty (where "qwerty" is the slug for the page name I'm linking in the button). Yours are like <yoursite>.com/?post_type=pbcezmobsite&p=484 (and that seems an odd format for this plugin).

Have you changed the permalink structure for your site? Also, are you using the current version of the plugin?

Be sure to name each page in the box at the top of the page configuration screen. The lower case of that name will become the slug for the page (spaces are replaced with hyphens).

Assuming you haven't changed the permalinks and you're using the current version of EzMSG, where are you getting the page link? Irene provides something she calls the "Permalink URL for this Page." It's at the bottom, just above the phone simulator, and it's the same as the link under the page name at the top. That's the link you should see for the page in your button links. Are you trying to link to a page directly without setting up the Parent hierarchy? When viewed as Current Site, you should see the list of pages linked on that site.

The method in EzMSG for linking pages into a site is handled by selecting the Parent page from the dropdown in the attributes box. That should tie your button to the proper permalink URL for the page.

Also, I'd recommend putting EzMSG on a fresh installation of WordPress and doing your testing there. Could be something else that's in conflict, if you have a few other plugins installed.

Hope this helps.

--George

[@Legacy3: Yes, her site is slow here, too. I'm guessing she has a lot more on the site than just EzMSG. I'll be interested to see what her odd permalinks actually suggest the problem is. Strange that the site runs properly (but slowly) in a desktop browser.]

Thanks Legacy and George! I had the permalink settings at %postname% and once I changed it to the default it worked fine. The only problem with that is I don't like the way it looks for my main site, so I may just install the mobile site on another WP site so I can change the permalinks back to the custom setting.

And thanks again for taking the time to check it out and post about it. I really appreciate it!

Jenny,

Your structure should have been /%postname%. You forgot the leading slash. Alternatively, if you are in WP 3.3.1 you could select the 'Postname' option to get the same results.

Although, pages will load slightly faster with 'Default' selected I like the Postname Permalinks better because they look better and yield an SEO boost.

Also, sometimes just clicking 'Save Changes' on the permalinks page without making any changes will clear up many permalinking issues.

Hi Everyone,

I have a couple of questions, I hope someone can help me.

Is there a way to put an EZMSG in a .mobi domain (I am not even sure if wordpress can be installed in a .mobi domain)? If we can, how do we make the index page of the ezmsg site be the front page of the whole site? So that if you click on mydomain .mobi you see the index page of the mobile site.

Or is it easier to just use the html version (once that capability is released)?

Also, does anyone know of a way that contact information can be added to the phone's contacts? In other words, could we prompt the visitor to the site to add our contact information to their contacts? Either by providing a vcard they could download or some other method?

Thanks!

Yes, you can certainly install WordPress on any site, assuming your hosting provider supports it. There's nothing really special about .mobi that I know of.

In answer to your first question, (1) set up a EzMobileSite using the EzMSG plugin; (2) go to EzMobileSite Defaults and select the site name you just created in Homepage Redirect Settings. The site you've created is now the default for this domain.

BTW (to anyone interested), I suggested this earlier, but it's worth repeating: I created an EzMobileSite on one of my test domains that I've called "dispatch" and configured as above. Then, I create a redirect page to each of my demo sites, so that each site has a button in the main menu of dispatch. Finally, I save a bookmark to dispatch onto the home page of my iPhone. Now I can just click the dispatch icon and show off several mobile site examples without leaving mobile safari. Easier and quicker to use than native bookmarks!

With regard to the question about adding a contact, have a look at this article: Adding a vCard to your iPhone Address Book from a web page » Blog Archive » The Code Train
Apple doesn't make it easy (by design) for one application to add data to another app's storage space. Here's another suggestion, though: use a QR code on your main (non-mobile) site or as a POS sign (for retail) to do this.

Other than that, I think you'll need to take the e-mail approach recommended in the article. I'm not sure about Android phones; perhaps they're a different story.

Hope this helps! Best of luck.

George,

Thank you so much for your help. I was looking for a "difficult" solution so I completely ignored the obvious. Again, thank you for taking the time to help.

Also, thank you for sharing your "dispatch" idea. It is a great way to make many demo sites easily accessible.

Again, thanks!

Legacy, I changed the permalinks back to postname (and updated WP), but when I do that the links on my phone still default to the home page. And the site is super slow in loading.

When I go back to the defaults, it loads fine, but still really slow.
These are my defaults links (that work) ...

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/?pbcezmobsite=contact

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/?pbcezmobsite=text-message-marketing

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/?pbcezmobsite=qr-codes

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/?pbcezmobsite=mobile-marketing-of-tampa-bay

-------
and these are my postname links (that don't work)

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/ezmb/mobile-marketing-of-tampa-bay/contact

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/ezmb/mobile-marketing-of-tampa-bay/text-message-marketing

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/ezmb/mobile-marketing-of-tampa-bay/qr-codes

mobilemarketingoftampabay.com/ezmb/mobile-marketing-of-tampa-bay

I'll give you my 2 cents, but don't take it as the last word.

You need to configure the DNS appropriately to do this. Most domain registrars will allow you to "forward" or "redirect" a domain, so you could just go to your registrar and set that up so the <xyz>.mobi forwards to the Permalink URL for the site. Or, you could "host" the domain (assuming you have unlimited hosting) and set up domain redirection at the Web server level. BE ADVISED THAT EITHER OF THESE SOLUTIONS HAVE POTENTIALLY NEGATIVE SEO IMPLICATIONS.

The best way to handle things, in my opinion, is to set up redirection from the main site to a subdomain located on the same domain name. If the main site isn't WordPress, or if you don't administer it, this means a separate installation of WP on the subdomain. It also somewhat frustrates the design feature of EzMSG of putting multiple sites on one installation. Irene has stated here that she thinks the SEO question is still open.

Of course, the design of the EzMSG plugin suggests itself as a centrally-hosted solution for multiple mobile sites under a common domain name, something like <xyzmobilesites>.com. In that case, you're back to the first solution (above) of redirecting the main site to the mobile site using the Permalink URL, only without the .mobi complexity and the expense of maintaining all of those extra domain registrations.

It's a thorny question, because some consultants prefer to control the domain names to ensure ongoing payment. That's outside of the technical scope of the question, however.

I'd be interested in hearing other thoughts on this. It's a tougher issue than it appears, and has wide-ranging implications beyond the simplicities of site plumbing.

I submitted a query via the support desk but it has been a few days now and I havn't heard back, so here goes (I know Irene is busy with an update so maybe that's it):

1. - One of my sites has the topbar "Right Button Text" appear on the left under the telephone Icon, try as I might I cannot find why it's displaying like that.

2. - What, if any, simple mobile wordpress payment options are there that can be used with this plugin? Seems like getting PayPal to integrate can be a nightmare.

Tx
BTW - Great software, can't wait for the update.

I am really missing it on the redirect code. I have a wordpress site on mysite .com and ezmsg automatically builds sites on mysite .com/mobile. When I use the redirect plugin I can redirect to mysite .com/mobile but then every mobile page. The only thing I can think of is to use a subdomain like m.mysite .com. However, that would mean I need to also load wp on the subdomain. Is this correct?
I sent support request several days ago but have not had any response (disappointed in the promptness of support). As long as I am complaining...received email saying that a new update was coming the next day which was 2 full days ago. I thought this would solve the need for redirect since you export as html....
I have clients and I try not to overpromise and underdeliver.
