Warning: Many Websites Are Starting to Get Penalized by Google

Have you or your webmaster recently received an email from Google stating:

"Dear webmaster of http://yourwebsite.com
Google systems have detected that your desktop site URLs redirect smartphone users to the homepage of the smartphone site rather than the page they found in Search results. This critical issue causes problems for Googlebot for smartphones because it can’t access your smartphone URLs. It also confuses your users."

Google is starting to crackdown on websites who redirect all of their mobile visitors to the same page no matter what link they click on.

Within the past month they've been emailing website owners warning them about the incorrect redirect.

Here is an official post regarding the improper redirects - http://googlewebmastercentral.blogsp...redirects.html

If you're still redirecting all of your mobile visitors to the same page... fix this now!

Google is starting to penalize websites for this. Why?

Google wants to provide their users with the best searching experience possible. If a website is redirecting a visitor who clicks on a link through Google search to a different page then what was intended... this is a poor experience for that user.

Think about it...

You're searching to purchase a new baseball glove on your cell phone. You see a link to Amazon for a brand new Rawlings baseball glove. You click the link and instead of being taken to the page for the Rawlings baseball glove... it sends you to Amazon's home page. Was that the page you wanted?

Check with your webmaster (or yourself) and make sure your mobile visitors aren't all being sent to the same page no matter what page they're clicking on. Also, make sure your website is not being penalized by Google if you had this mistake in place.

If your website is built on wordpress, here is a plugin that will fix this issue - Ultimate Wordpress Mobile Redirect

Set A Unique Redirect URL For Every Page and Post!

Unlike most other wordpress redirect plugins, Ultimate WordPress Mobile Redirect allows you to specify a different mobile/tablet URL for every page and post on your WordPress site.
