Would this process be affected by a caching plugin?

I'm just thinking that if a cached page is stored and delivered as an html page, would the link be included - like any affiliate link ? And, if not, would the "replacement" take place ?

Many users are using caching plugins without a problem. There's a wide variety of such plugins and I obviously cannot comment about each one, but this does not seem to be an issue.

I would like to buy this plugin. However I got a question... Does the plugin use javascript (For example: onclick or something similar)? If yes, I've recently read an article on How Google is getting smarter reading javascripts and their bot is able to follow links presented through Javascript (even if it is no follow). What are your thoughts?

The plugin does not use onclick or other methods of creating a Javascript link.

Elf Links is in its 4th generation with multiple layers of protection as it was anticipated years ago Googlebot would keep getting smarter. We're way ahead of this.

An onclick, or something similar, tells Google there is a link. Then the question is whether Google can read it. There is nothing like that in the source code for Google to read. There is literally nothing at all.

Is the plugin tolerated by Amazon if it is used for amazon affiliate links? (sorry if the question was asked before)

Hi Brian -

I was one of the original purchasers but have not used it in a while as I took a hiatus from IM while caring for my dad for the last 2 years, and can't find my user name to update the plugin. Can you help? Not sure what email address the account was under before - changed ISPs about the same time, as well!

Transaction ID: 8VT66374LV0803159
purchase date: Nov 7, 2012

Thank you for the update - as always, everything you do is first class!!

Hi Brian,

We have a lot of photos and images on our websites which are hyperlinked with our affiliate urls.

I believe this plugin uses a certain code which works with text within posts and pages.

How can we use this plugin to hide our affiliate links on images?

Also, does it work on widgets within the sidebar?

Thank you.

Melody - sent you a PM with login information.

Tony - the plugin works with images. When creating an Elf Link you provide two pieces of info: the link url and text for the link. For an image instead of text you use the full html for your image. Not just the link to the url but the html starting with <img src

Elf Links does work with widgets in the sidebar. That said, it works in my various demo sites and I have tested this issue, but I realize there are a zillion different themes - some are bizarre and some don't have widgets - and it is impossible for me to know if it works with your theme in a widget.

I like the way this plugin works but the only issue is setting up each link. I saw another plugin in which you activate it once and it automatically hides all external links.

You can whitelist fee authority sites so that u still link to big info sites like wikipedia etc.

I am not naming but if you allow I can so that we get a better one to one comparison and it helps improve Elf Links.

Also does this hide links created by Easyazon?

If a different plugin is creating links then either that plugin needs to be modified to put the links in Elf Links format, or programming needs to be done to get the plugins to work together. I reached out to easyazon long ago and received no response. One user also told me he also got nowhere with trying to make that plugin useful.

Many of the features in each generation of Elf Links are driven by user suggestions. At some place you obviously need to create a link. If you do it through Elf Links the links are automatically hidden.

Purchased the Elf Links plugin recently and so far the customer support has been poor.

I found a bug where random Elf Links appear in the Admin panel header, overlapping the info.

I opened support Ticket #416195 on Wednesday 6/17 to resolve the issue. I included a description of the problem and a screenshot demonstrating the bug.

I didn't hear back so on Friday 6/19, I sent another message, attached to the ticket.

I still didn't hear back. So on Monday 6/22 I sent another followup.

Yet again, no response.

It's now Thursday 6/25 and I have no idea what's going on so am resorting to posting in this thread to get help.

What's the deal?

At the outset, I do apologize for not responding earlier to the initial support request. It is a bizarre situation I wanted to think about what could be causing the issue. I also was not ignoring the two follow-up messages. My ticketing software never sent me emails about a follow-up being added to the original message.

I know this isn't the answer you want, but there is no time frame for resolution.

You sent me a picture of 3 vertical links appearing on a post header, overlapping what appears to be an AdSense ad, saying the links were used on a different post

No one else has remotely had any similar situation and nothing obvious comes to mind. The picture itself is a puzzler. It is possible a new version of Elf Links soon to be released may address the issue.

Elf Links has nothing to do with page formatting, headers or link placement. Wherever the Elf Links code is used is where a link is inserted. If the issue is from the new Easy Adsense plugin - in the members area is a link to a prior, more stable version of that plugin to try.

Otherwise, every WordPress install is different with an infinite number of theme and plugin combinations and quality of coding. The fix may be you using a different theme / plugin combination.

Even if you provided useful information - instead of just a picture - such as a combination of X theme with A, B, C, D, E and F plugins is causing the oddball problem, unless the issue is obvious a quick resolution is unlikely. The most obvious testing would be to deactivate plugins one at a time, and test a new theme, to see where the issue is coming from.

While I understand your desire to quickly fix this weird issue, it is not a bug in Elf Links. Rather, a theme or plugin is doing something odd. If you are using Amazon, ClickBank or Ebay links the optional and alternate method of creating links without using the Elf Links admin panel may be a workaround.

Otherwise, the next version of Elf Links will have some new code intended to shield the plugin from other plugins.

Thank you for the update.

I tried deactivating Easy Adsense and using a different plugin but that didn't resolve.

I did notice that it's only happening on Posts, not Pages. A difference between the two is that the I have the Elf Links code auto generated via the Adsense plugin on posts. But I manually selected the Pages to show it. So perhaps that's a clue. I will try the manual method on Posts to see if that is a workaround.

I've also noticed that the "floating" Elf Link only appears when logged in. If I view the post in Chrome via Incognito, the floating link does not appear.

Question, do you think the overlapping will negatively impact my use of Elf Links? In other words, do you think it will make it more likely that Google will detect the affiliate links?

I would like to use the new way of creating links, however, as far as I understand, that doesn't allow the use of Amazon Tracking ID's. Do you plan to enable the use of Amazon Tracking ID's with the new way of affiliate linking in the next release? If so, that would be awesome.

The new method does support Amazon tracking. Look at the "go" file and the default code for Amazon links is acme-20. Just change it your tracking code, such as trankuility-20.

If the floating link is only when you are logged in then it is a non-issue with Google.

I had 2 doubts while I was testing the plugin :

1. I tried to link image and I copied the <img src =""/> code in the text and URL to the page I want to link to. But is there any way to format the image? Should i put the center alignment, other formatting etc. in the text box only?

2. I do not want the plugin to replace text on Web. Suppose on my web I have text 'ABC' and in ELF text 'DEF'. Now i want user to see 'ABC' only what is the best way other than changing text in plugin. Can I leave text field empty and within Span Class = '1'>ABC/> specify the text I want?

Thanks!

1. You can put formatting around the Elf Links code. If you want, you can test putting additional formatting within the Elf Link and see what happens, but I suggest having this type of html outside of the plugin code.

2. If you don't want to replace text then don't use any text. If you have ABC text and want the Elf Links code to show ABC text, then you should probably use ABC text in your code instead of DEF.

You will have to change the text in the plugin. You can't use DEF text in the plugin and then say you want the plugin to show different text. That does not make sense.

If you have further questions of this type please send a PM.

I have multiple tracking ID's. Am I able to enter multiple tracking ID's in the GO file? I thought I was only able to insert one ID there.

Is the new method compatible with the old method? I have about 300 Elf Links already inserted. Would be nice not to have to undo all the current Elf Links and redo them with the new method.

Lastly, do you have an ETA for the next release?

It is just one ID but I'll look at additional IDs as I get feedback on the new method. It is entirely separate from the admin panel method of creating links. Next update should be later next month.

I'm so frustrated with this plugin. Does anyone have a tutorial that they are willing to share?

I don't want to have to get a refund but I just can't get this to work.

I have a big site where I need to go in manually and change all the links. However, when I put a link into the Elf links box and add the text that link does not change. I'm doing something wrong and need help.

Try submitting a ticket to the support desk so someone can look at your site and setup.

You submitted a ticket at 4 am my time on a Sunday morning (7 am your time). The response sent 90 minutes later wasn't fast enough for you?

Previously, you had a pre-sale question at 7:30 in the morning. It was answered 20 minutes later. Then you wanted a tutorial and that was answered within the hour.

Maybe instead of posting on the forum - was it 2 minutes after submitting a 4 am support request on a Sunday about it not being answered? - we should try something a little more reasonable:

If you are not getting the responses, and you never sent a message inquiring about the ticket status or saying messages were not received, send me a PM via the forum with your Wordpress login and I will set this up for you during regular business hours.

- Update:

Apparently ticket responses are in fact being received.

A review of the website in question showed the user had uploaded a plugin to Wordpress but never activated it or set it up. Once the plugin was activated and setup Elf Links worked fine.

The instructions sent by support state:

"When you have saved the Elf Link the plugin gives you a code.

Again, there are screen shots and instructions on the Elf Links admin page.

Step 4 - Copy and paste the code into the post or page where you want the link to appear.

Again, there are screen shots showing how it looks in the Wordpress editor.

That's it. Could be less than 60 seconds to do."

I do not have any code to copy and paste on my admin panel. If you mean the number then you have to put that into a span code correct?

Yes, that is what I meant the number is in the span code. In fact I made a draft sample post for your site with an Elf Link in it so you can see exactly what is done.

If you have any questions about this just look at the sample post.

Interesting option I just discovered ...

I installed the free PHP Code for posts. It is by the Missing Code. The purpose of this plugin is to put regularly used php into a shortcode, and the shortcode can then be used on different posts. This way you don't have to retype the php code on each post and worry about making typos.

In addition to php, you can use regular text and html with the plugin.

What I did is create an Elf Link and copied the Elf Link link code into a PHP Code snippet. When I referred to the PHP Code snippet on a page the Elf Link worked great.

If you have recurring text you want to use on posts and pages, and included in the text is an affiliate link, you can use Elf Links and PHP Code for posts together.

What you do is:

1. Create the Elf Link

2. Create a PHP Code snippet and use the Elf Link in it, along with your text, image links, and html.

3. Refer to the PHP Code snippet in various posts and pages.

For some setups this could be a big time saver.

Ken, thanks for reminding me about this. A recent code update was released and I then realized I had not tested the 'anonymous' feature so I removed the reference from the sales page which answered your question. I have now tested it and it still works fine, so I will add the section back in.

Here is a post on my of my blogs:

http://internetprofituniversity.com/...filiate-sites/

As I write this the blog has the current version of Elf Links, is running an older version of WordPress (3.5.1), and the "Elf Links" plugin is called bob.

In the members area are instructions for doing this. You will need to use FTP to change the name of the plugin directory Elf Links is located in, and use the WordPress plugin editor in the admin area to edit 1 line in 1 file.

Then you can call the plugin whatever you want so you don't have to worry about your Wordpress version or a theme referring to the plugin. Google (or anyone) could scan your plugin directory or try a direct hit to see if Elf Links is installed. They will find nothing because there is no "Elf Links" plugin. The plugin is called bob. (You can probably use a better name, like spamblockultra).

Hi B!

Links are not detected - I got that.

But it looks like text within that link is not detected either? Does this mean I can/should double up on that text if it is a relevant keyword?

IE : if you want to buy (product name), you can get (product name with elf link by clicking here) today.

The page will read to the bots:
If you want to buy product name, you can get today.

^^^^^^^
If I use this kind of sentence, I'd need to be crafty for smooth looking content, no? Or will this be negligible damage?

Thanks!

Jill

Jill, my standard practice is to initially "double up" the text - meaning the same link text is used for both the inserted Elf Link and web page text.

I also try to keep link management and potential future updates in mind. Elf Links can also serve as a link manager so that if you need to change text, or links, for a link that appears numerous times in the site you only have to change it once in the Elf Links panel.

Otherwise, yes, the entire link, including the link text, is replaced. Up to 250 characters can be used in the link text.

New - Elf Links Autobot

This is as easy as it gets.

Elf Links Autobot is the newest Elf Links plugin. The Autobot will automatically convert links in your posts and pages so they are not identifiable by Google as being a link.

If you do not want links to certain domains converted then you can whitelist them in the Autobot control panel.

Questions and Answers

Is Autobot compatible with regular Elf Links? Yes. You can install both plugins on the same website. The links you have previously created with Elf Links will continue to work. Autobot will then convert other links or new links you create.

Does Autobot replace the other Elf Links plugin? No. It depends on your needs. The 'regular' Elf Links plugin gives you more control over links and text on a link by link basis. Autobot allows for faster use of this technology for existing sites with many links.

What is the big Autobot advantage? If you have a site with 1000 pages then manually modifying links to the regular Elf Links format is not a lot of fun. Now you don't have to. Just install the Autobot and you're done.

Also, if you have another script creating pages and links, such as an Amazon script, the Autobot might be able to convert those links to Elf Links. The 'regular' Elf Links plugin is not compatible with other link generating plugins on your website, but the Autobot has been designed to convert links it finds even if something else created them. No guarantees of compatibility (and please don't ask if your other premium plugin is compatible as there is no way for me to know), but for the first time there is the possibility of taking links generated by one plugin and having the Autobot convert them into Elf Links.

Do I need to also install the 'Easy Adsense' plugin to use the Autobot? No.

Does Autobot makes changes to my website? No. The plugin makes no changes to the content of your pages and posts in the Wordpress database. If you uninstall the Autobot then the links in your pages will continue to be seen as before. The plugin does store any domains you whitelist in the database.

What is the white list? You list domains you want the Autobot to skip. For example, you may want to leave internal links as-is to preserve link juice. While you want to hide affiliate links, there may be links to another domain where you want to pass PageRank or show Google you are linking to authority sites.

To use the white list from within your Wordpress admin panel go to Settings and click on Elf Links Autobot. In the box list domains to white list, separated by commas, and click enter. Super easy.

What are the differences between Autobot and 'regular' Elf Links?

With 'regular' Elf Links you create links one by one in a control panel and get a code for each link. You then insert the code into your posts and pages. The code is what Google sees. For site visitors the plugin converts the code back into a working link in their web browser. With Autobot you do not create any links and do not insert any code into posts and pages.

'Regular' Elf Links can be used as a link manager across your entire website so you can change a link once and it will be changed everywhere. The Autobot is not a link manager. It just changes all links.

With 'regular' Elf Links the source code of the web page that Google sees does not have any links - just a span tag and a code. With the Autobot there are two randomized codes and encrypted text where the link was in the page. This will be 'gobbledygook' to Google. Every time you refresh a page the codes and text in the source code will be different.

Can I change the name of the plugin? Yes. Elf Links plugins are designed for maximum anonymity, but unlike the regular 'Elf Links' plugin you do not need to made an edit so the plugin knows what it is called. If your theme displays plugin names, or you are super paranoid about Google, feel free to rename the plugin to something else, such as mastercard, twitteraid, superspamblock, etc.

Anything you have seen Autobot not work with? Iframed links. If you are using links inside an iframe then Autobot may break that code.

The plugin has been tested with numerous default and free themes and no conflicts have been found. If you find a conflict with your setup please let me know.

If your theme had a conflict with 'regular' Elf Links try the Autobot Links are created in a different way, and I inserted a sneaky trick that should make Autobot have fewer potential conflicts.

How to Get the Autobot

The new Autobot is free for all Elf Links members. It is in the members area you get access to after buying Elf Links.

Brian, this is an excellent improvement! Hope everyone can test it one different premium plugins and share experience about which one is compatible with autobot. This indeed opens doors for endless possibilities.

Hi,
Is this plugin still being activity maintained and updated? i'm on the fence at the moment and cannot find a lot of info about this plugin after doing a bit of search and I also noticed that the site was up on Flippa so want to make sure i'm not throwing my money away.

A couple of questions:

Does the autobot use JavaScript? i'm not sure how it can change links on the fly?
Do you get access to both plugins (elf links & Autobot) in the members area on a single purchase?

Cheers

Considering the recent updates, plus the new demo, plus the new Autobot, plus spending a few bucks to get the Flippa backlink well before releasing new goodies like the Autobot, plus the fact the plugin is now in its 4th generation of updates over three years, it's not only maintained and updated, it is one of the more stable products around. I don't do "launches" of a product for a week then shut the door and go into hiding until the next launch.

The plugins use php and Javascript. The Autobot is in version 1.00 so if you have any issues with it let me know via the support desk. Feedback helps direct areas of product development, and the Autobot was created from a feature request.

Both plugins are available in the members area to download. There has been no extra fee for the Autobot or for the updates. Everyone who bought the original plugin years ago has access to the current version and the Autobot for free.

My Quick Review - have bought the product.

Hiding aff links, Is this necessary? Something I'd always considered, but I'd always been concerned with a) the method and b) 'how would a search engine identify an affiliate link from any other link?

Well elf links certainly does the business with hiding your links. It's a little bit techy to start off with, the guides are useful but not step by step. When you follow the process it's quite simple though, didn't use support but they seem responsive and friendly.

I had some problems fitting in with one of my weird sidebar plug-ins as it wouldn't accept the codes. But sorted it out in the end by using an image, and it all worked out well.

Whatever your setup there is some effort involved in implementing this, but it does work. I've set up on three sites with a variety of configurations and plug-ins, it's quite simple when it clicks. My review stops at the implementation stage, I'm hoping it helps with some of my underperforming sites - if it does I might let you know

Does what it says though, hopefully it helps with ranking,,

Hello Brian,
I've read all through the thread but can't see an answer to my question so hope you can clarify please.
I have used Pretty Links Pro on some sites for link management as much as nice looking links both with text and with image links.
Now, if I were to use Autobot - which presumably would "elf-i-fy" those links, and if I were then to whitelist my own domain to preserve internal links, would this then whitelist the pretty links and negate the Autobot?
And if so, is there a way to get around this that you are aware of?
(Pretty links are currently "http://www.mydomian.com/linkname"

Hope this makes sense - I've been mulling over for a while and the Autobot seems great for existing links
Thank you

On a demo site, running the default WordPress theme and the Autobot, I installed Pretty Link Lite to see the results:

First test: no white listing with two links in a post, a regular link and a Pretty Link.

Everything worked great. The Autobot was able to find the Pretty Link and converted it. Testing, the converted Pretty Link worked fine and redirected to the desired location.

Second test: white listing of the demo domain with two links, a regular link and a Pretty Link.

Everything worked great. The Autobot ignored the Pretty Link per the white list. Testing, the Pretty Link worked fine and redirected to the desired location.

Conclusion: Although the Autobot worked as intended, your goal was to convert only the Pretty Links while not converting other internal links. At this time, either all the links are converted or they are ignored.

Thank you for taking the time to test and answer my query.
The conclusion is as I expected from following the logic - I can't immediately see any way of getting around it.
I decided to buy your plugin yesterday anyway and will give some more thought as to how to deal with existing sites.
If I come up with any useful ideas, I'll post back and share.
I've installed Autobot on an existing amazon site and will be interested to see any changes in traffic as a result.
The addition of Autobot was the deciding factor for me - just for feedback.
Thanks again
