David Michael Bowers doesn't just envision art in Pittsburgh , PA, he basically lives it! For hours he will strive to achieve the image that he designs within his imagination. Taking every single brushstroke to the highest quality, his paintings begin to take shape. Looking at some of his paintings one will feel they are transported to the scene and are watching the people in it. It is as if he is telling a story through his art and one is right there in the midst of it. Detail oriented, David brings such unusual life to his paintings that one can stare at them for hours and still find something more intriguing and interesting in them. This is an artist that looks at life in a unique way and forms works of art that are truly different, yet realistic. David M. Bowers is a man who disciplines himself to design, shape and complete such intricate pieces of art, no matter the time and no matter the price. If he envisions it, he
makes it happen and his playground is his canvass.

A typical day for David begins at 7 in the morning and lasts until 5:30 pm. On the weekends he may also put in a few hours, but only in the mornings. He also relaxes and loves the beach. The Seven Mile Beach in the Grand Cayman Islands is his favorite one. But, back to his talent (which he utilizes to the fullest extent). One will find that David puts great pressure on himself to produce what he sees as his finished pieces. During the hours he paints in his studio he takes as many breaks as he needs. The way he paints is grueling and tedious because of the method he uses. On his website David goes into much depth about the process he goes through to complete a painting. He explains how he primes his canvass and how he layers his paints in great detail. An excerpt from David's website about his method of painting, with his permission, is as follows: "While the top layers of paint are of a thin translucent glaze, the middle layers of paint are applied Alla Prima (painting wet into wet). Sometimes a colour like blue might have as many as four transparent layers before the semi-opaque middle tones are applied to the top. When the painting is finished, I will sand one last time with pumice stone powder, using a dampened piece of felt. Then, my final touch to bring all of the layers of colour alive is to varnish the painting." All of this is time consuming, but after he puts in his long hours and hard work, a masterpiece is born. Something truly unique and mystifying - an amazing piece of art that no other could have envisioned is there.

The studio where David paints has ample space so he doesn't feel confined, leaving him with the ability to stretch his imagination muscles to their fullest extent, and he has all the tools that he needs to make his paintings come alive. Everything is in order so that he can find what he needs immediately. He usually has two or three paintings in progress at one time. David has a definite schedule for his paintings and is very organized as well. The paintings usually take him about a month to complete. Some may take a little bit longer. Using discipline and determination he completes his paintings in perfect form.

In the past David was an instructor for the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania from 1981 - 1991. He also graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh several years before in 1979 majoring in Visual Communications. During the years that he taught eager eyed art students, he also produced over 100 book cover illustrations. Many of them are well known now. Two of his Time Magazine covers are in the permanent collection in Washington , DC . Though he resides in Pittsburgh , PA , his work has been in shows all over the United States and in London and France . With numerous awards for his excellent abilities he has a great history of artistic talent in his past. David is currently making huge strides in the fine art field. In fact, his commercial art career is a thing of the past. This artist enjoys the freedom that fine art provides him. He uses his talent as a gift that provides a vehicle to combine his skill and imagination to create masterpieces. Painting from his heart, using his art tools without restrictions, is of course one of the greatest empowering gifts that fuels him.

On David's website there is an online gallery showing his recent works and his exhibitions. The website shows the works of a talent that has been perfected. David names all of his paintings and some of the names are "The Tiny", "The Emancipation of David" and "It Will Happen". One wants to know, "Where did he think of this or how?"

When asked how he comes up with the ideas for his paintings David responds, "Ideas come out of the blue mostly. Sometimes the idea keeps evolving while working on the final drawing." In order to begin a project he will use photographs of models and small drawings to develop his ideas. It would seem that fabulous works of art must be difficult to part with but David insists, "No, I don't get attached to paintings because I'm always looking ahead to the next one." Many people wonder if he is projecting a message in his paintings and David answers, "The meanings of my paintings are up to the interpretation of the viewer." The viewer develops the story behind his masterpieces. He engages his audience by enticing them to utilize their own imagination to infer a meaning.
