"Traveling with an Infant

Traveling with an infant can be tricky, and is complicated by whether you are traveling by car or plane. With the holidays coming up, many parents will be hitting the road or taking to the sky with their infants. Obviously there are pros and cons for travel by cars or planes. Planes are often faster (for long distance travel), but you may not have a lot of flexibility in your schedule. Traveling by car may be slower, but you can take your time and is pretty straight forward. Below are a few tips for traveling with an infant by plane.

With increased security, getting to the place may be more stressful than actually flying. Do know that TSA limits the amount of liquids and gels that can be carried on (and these must be placed in a clear plastic bag); however, formula and breast milk do not count towards this limit. You will need to carry your infant through security, so consider using a baby sling or front carrier to keep your hands free for handling tickets, bags, etc. Just be sure to choose a carrier that does not have metal parts or it will have to come off at security.

If you have purchased a ticket for your baby, you’ll have to bring your car seat with you through the airport. Airlines do not require a separate ticket for children under two, providing she rides on your lap. Car seats can be tagged and checked through to your destination, or can be checked at the gate and retrieved at the end of each flight. You cannot bring a car seat on board the plane unless it will be used in a seat. Strollers are handled the same way; however, if you did not bring a sling for your infant, you may want to consider checking it at the gate so your baby can comfortably ride around the airport.

Most families with young children are eligible for pre-boarding. While pre-boarding with an infant will give you some extra time to get settled in, you will also have to entertain small children in a confined space for an extended period of time. You’ll have to decide what works best for your family. Young children, especially babies, may have a hard time adjusting to the pressure changes during takeoff and landing. Be sure to feed your infant, or at least give her a pacifier, during takeoff and landings. The swallowing will help her ears adjust to the changes in pressure."
