I contacted a web design company about an e-commerce website. I will be selling clothing. They gave me an estimate of $2000 for the price. Do you think this is a good price?

I'm not really sure about that but it's quite pricey in my opinion. Try Odesk, where you can hire freelancers who are as talented as those in other web design company. In that website, you can actually have your freelancers bid for the lowest pay amount. That way, you could spend not that much money for a website. Just wanna share this idea and hope this helps!

The real question is.. are they just designing the site or are they actually giving you a finished product? the next question would be; How many products will be in your store?

A general guide with WooCommerce is $100 to set up the plugin and then $10 a product to load it.

I will more than bet you can get it done "Cheaper" but you need to consider what the company you have a quote from is doing for that $2000, vs what a company that charges you $1000. If in the end you are comparing the services and it is apples to apples, then obviously you go with the lessor. If there are value added options in the more expensive quote, then you need to consider those options and how that may affect the overall outcome of what you are trying to accomplish.

Cheaper is generally NOT better, in the same breath... more expensive may be just that... more expensive.

Ask questions, understand what the quote is getting you.

$2000 may be a bargain or a rip off depending on the exact nature of the work they are proposing.

You haven't given us much detail to go off as to the complexity of the site and the number of items and categories you'll have, as well as all the multi-media elements.

That sounds like a tad too expensive for an e-commerce website... Maybe look for other offers before paying these guys, there are plenty of web developers who will probably offer you exactly what you need at half the price.

Besides, since ODesk was mentioned, did you know that some companies seal the deal with a client and then go to these websites to outsource the work? It could be the same web developers at odesk doing the work for the company anyway...

I think that it is not a good price. Many companies are providing such facility only at $1000 so choice is yours.

I think, you should split (Designing + Development) the work that would split the money as well and you'd get your project done in reasonable price.
