Looking to get started creating WordPress sites for others. Advice needed

Hey guys,

I'm not looking to get into website building professionally as an income stream, but I've recently had a couple of people close to me get burned paying someone to build a site who never did it.I felt badly because one of them asked me about it and I said I don't do them for others.

I'm no expert but I think I know enough about Wordpress now to create a simple web presence for friends/family who need a simple web presence.

My questions all have to do with how and where to host these for other people so I can build them for the customer but they maintain full ownership and access. I know how to go register my own domain name and wordpress site on Google but I wouldn't know how to do it for someone else. I hope I'm making sense here, lol.

Any help you guys could offer would be much appreciated. Especially as it pertains to keeping it simple and avoiding adding a lot of work for myself. Thanks in advance!

I don't do client work any more and I don't help friends any more, but when I use to, I had them sign up for their own hosting and domain. That way it's under their control and ownership and they are responsible for those costs and payments.

From there they can give you the log in details so you can set up the site for them.

    Simple as that.

You could go the other route, get a reseller hosting account and sell them the hosting, so you get the monthly fee's, but that can be a pain, and they would be bugging you for support, or bugging you when something goes wrong, or their site is not working, ect. Unless you have many clients, it might not be worth the hassle.

And of course, you'd be best to use pre-made theme's, as to avoid a lot of work for yourself. You probably already planned to go that way.

Simple indeed Ron, so much so I don't know why I didn't think of it, lol! And you're right, pre-made themes all the way for me. I'm talking really simple stuff here, and I'm going to be very specific about that, lol!
    Thanks for the help man.

It also wouldn't hurt to set clear expectations before you do any work. I say that because some people will bug the crap out of you, to help with every single little thing. I am happy to help people, but there is a point, or things they need to do on their own. Not every one, but some folks can drive you crazy.

Maybe even put together a PDF that tells how to do common things, like upgrading themes, plugins, how to post, how to add images, ect, ect. Could save you a lot of repeat explaining.

Over the years I've had many of the same questions from customers, so I have put together reports from time to time to explain certain things. And I often send that to them, include it with product or put it up for download on my site. Not that I don't want to help people, just easier to give them a PDF than type the same things over and over, and some times I might forget something.

    Just a thought

Up charge them for support, if you have any interest in doing that. Once you have a website built you have many potential revenue streams. Most of the time, this will be passive.
