Strange Wordpress Question...

I am switching themes for a Wordpress site and hired a developer to do it. I have a lot of blog posts and they all have featured images. He says the only way he can transfer the images to the the new theme is to do it manually, one-by-one, which will take him a lot of time. All the other files for the site were transferred through FTP, no problem.

Does this sound right? Do Wordpress feature images not transfer from one theme to another?

    It depends on the theme and how that theme handles, uses or inserts images. There is also a wide range of sizes between themes. Seems every theme I look at, the post/feature images are different sizes. Sure no universal one size for all.

    Of course we can't say with limited information, but it could be possible.

    That's wrong although its right if you spend ages and ages doing it manually.. You can import the file from .SQL file full backup! (PHPMYADMIN) and import the .SQL. Its not complicated to import the file if you know what to do inside cPanel/PHPMYADMIN. It takes about 5 minutes to import the old .SQL file over to the new wordpress, may be less.

      You did not read the post carefully enough. I's not a matter of importing the data and doesn't have to do with the SQL database.

      It is the difference of how the new theme handles images.

    If the source file with your post and image data is transferred correctly you shouldn't need to manually do that.

    I think you could try to upload all images with FTP (only if you import the same database) and then, use Ajax rebuild thumbnails plugin to regenerate thumbnail sizes. However, this will increase the number of images stored on your server, because each theme has its own sizes defined.

    Alright, thanks all. It looks like it could be done if the developer knows what he is doing. I guess the difficulty lies with the theme. I'll press the developer to find a solution based on your feedback. Thanks again.

    Do you people who answered (Ron excluded) have the first clue about how WordPress works or are you just spouting off to raise your post count?

    To the OP - if your original post contains what your developer said verbatim, then he has no clue either.

    If an image is set as a featured image in a WordPress post, it is there. Period. The only thing the theme has to do is determine how, if, or when to display it. No more uploading needed, no FTP, no database manipulations, no nothing.

    It is a simple matter of adding a template tag or some coding where you want the featured image to show up:

      Agreed, it sounds like a classic case of a "developer" taking a clueless newbie for a ride because of poor uneducated choices. Who needs a "developer" when you are using a theme? If you like being a fool parted with his money easily, out of lack of understanding of what you are doing, continue your current business practices and keep this magical wordpress thingy as obscure and confounded as possible. Hell, why would anyone want to be familiar with the technologies that they use to run their business? They would have to be crazy people!

      Correct. Sounds like your developer doesn't know what he/she is doing, Supafly. It's really just a matter of one line of code.

    Seems every one is jumping to conclusions now and over reaching.

    Maybe the developer is honest and not taking advantage.

    Alright folks, just asked a simple question. Did not intend to get controversial. And no Sam, I'm not a newbie. I am a marketer with about a dozen very successful clients in their local markets. I am not a developer, do not know a lot of code, but need to customize WP themes. I hired a new developer and thought it was odd that he couldn't transfer the images. That's why I came in here to ask. That's it.

    For those of you who've added constructive answers, thank you. Since this post, I've hired a new developer and all is right with the world. Thanks again...back to work.
