I've been out of the game for awhile but I need to get a website up and going for my home business that is starting to expand. Just wondered what software would give me a professional looking, flexible website and be fairly easy to use. I'm pretty computer savvy by my wife isn't and is like her to be able to make changes if necessary. I have used HTML templates before but would like something a bit more visual and easy for my wife. Thanks in advance guys.

Wordpress is more popular then ever in my opinion, and is still my favorite. I use it for 95% of all my sites. With so many plugins free and paid, it's hard to beat.

Try Wix. I believe it's terribly underrated. It's one of the best tools out there.

I love the combination of WordPress with the OptimizePress Plugin. I use Wordpress as the CMS and run some of the great themes provided by Studio Press on the Genisis Framework. They are great right out of the box. Then I use the OptimizePress plugin for sales pages, squeeze pages, and anything else that needs a custom design. It makes it very easy to create great looking pages.

Yes, I second Wordpress though you need to be careful which plugins you install and restrict yourself to just a few useful/good ones because otherwise your site will slow down considerably.

      Hi Jitterbug978,

As you can see most people are confirming your past experience that wordpress is still one of the best ways to start a new website and I also agree.

A few things to note (particularly for newbies following this thread):

      - Wordpress.org (different to Wordpress.com) is the preferred content management system (cms) that people above are talking about.

It is highly regarded as it is quick and easy to install, easy to update, has thousands of free themes and plugins to make your site look professional, is suitable for beginners to advanced website users, ranks well with Google, and best of all - you fully own and control your website (you'll see why this is the best part when you read below).

      - Other alternatives mentioned so far such as Wix, and Weebly could be shut down at any time (think Google blogs and Yahoo GeoCities as big name examples of website builders that closed). This can leave you and your traffic stranded and having to start from scratch after all that hard work!

Generally the other alternatives to Wordpress often do not rank as well in search engines (out of the box) and may or may not be responsive (display the page on a tablet/phone), may have different content on different servers (affecting webpage load times) and limited in what you can do with them but they may be a bit easier to set up in the start.

Ultimately there are many options out there but there is a good reason why Wordpress is the most popular web building platform available today.

At the end of the day it will give you what you want - a professional looking website, easy to use (way easier than HTML templates for a newbie) and there are heaps of tutorial videos around - just search Google!

      Good luck!

      Nick

I believe Nick here just about summed it up pretty well. WordPress is, without a doubt, what you should be using for any "type" of site you're hoping to build. I checked out the link in Nick's signature and he obviously knows what he's doing with WordPress - In fact, for someone who needs help building a WordPress site it looks like he's offering some REAL help at the site in his signature.

WordPress is fantastic, free software. You can build any type of site you need. However, unless you have experience with it - It certainly is not "easy" to learn.

Many folks who have experience marketing online, (with WordPress), will often say it's easy to use. But for someone just starting out - it can be "tricky", to say the least.

Look for a hosting service that already has WordPress fully installed for you, and you can have a professional looking website up and running in no time. No need for HTML or messing around trying to install. Look for a theme that allows some flexibility like custom headers and menus, I really like Pagelines free theme, I have 4 websites running off this and they all look different. Good luck!

Hi Jitterbug. I always use WordPress + Genesis, and a custom design most of the time. That way you get a good-looking, mobile-friendly site and you can edit your content without having to handle any code.

WordPress is really easy to work with. And it's also among the most popular website scripts out there. Also, if you don't know how to do certain things with wordpress, you can find tons of tutorials online.

Use Wordpress and forget other platforms.

Here is the article to get you started using this CMS.
Use WordPress as a CMS (Content Management System) - Tuts+ Code Article

Here is the marketplace where you can buy a template for $35 and pay extra $50 and they will install it to your server. All Wordpress themes there are well documented and come with instructions how to set up and get you started in no time.
Website Templates | WordPress Themes | ThemeForest

Get the cheapest hosting with some popular providers like Godaddy, Hostgator, Bluehost etc..

If you don't want to get involved in managing your shared hosting account and deal with other more technical tasks - just use the Squarespace.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!

Hey, I am not into programming, but I would suggest you a software namely TemplateToaster. You can design website templates and themes for multiple CMS such as worpdress, Joomla, drupal, prestshop, Magento etc. You just need to design template (or theme) using this software and then install that theme on respective CMSs.
