The two are inexorably interconnected and intertwined. For example, a responsive design is now utterly crucial as more than half the web browsers in the the world are mobile devices. Bounce rate is now one of the most significant ranking metrics for search engines.

So if your site looks like it's been hit with a bag of spanners and / or is difficult to navigate, it won't do well in the search results. These issues should be addressed first by any site, before focusing on SEO on and offsite.

As a designer I cannot agree that design and SEO are inexorably interconnected because design is highly subjective and that depends on one's education and other factors.

Well if you know SEO then you can be a good designer and if you know only designing then to be a good designer you definitely need SEO. Both are interconnected with each other. Design is an art and you can design a web page according to you best but SEO guy can ruin your effort in a second because designer perspective may be different from the SEO person. So, before start designing, you must concern with a SEO Analyst to design well according to marketing strategy.

I would add a 3rd variable into the equation CRO. From Design to SEO to CRO, you can end up with a totally different site than when you started.

Design is placing all of the elements of a webpage in a manor that is functional and allows for the content of the site to be displayed.

SEO of the same site might dictate the need to move around or add some elements for better function in the realm of SEO.

CRO might dictate the addition, deletion, and movement of elements as is dictated within the concepts of better conversion.

In the phases that follow the design phase you start adding, deleting, and moving elements the design may to some extent remain in tact... but ultimately the design as it was built will be but a memory.

In the process you start adding images and removing sliders and inserting social media and adding author boxes and removing link elements in the side bar adding elements in the navigation bar and removing some here and adding more there all of these changes effect the use and benefit of each of the 3 steps mentioned above.

Can you say that one is more important than the other? well the reality is you cant have one without the other, so I would say that they are all equal. You cant concern yourself with traffic if you don't have a site. you can concern yourself with conversion if you don't have traffic.

Ideally, SEO and Marketing concerns would always be on par with Design goals.Astrong SEO can identify goals prior to the development process and work hand in hand with the Designers to create a end product that is both aesthetically pleasing and successful for the business it represents. This requires that the relationship between Designers and SEO team isn’t adversarial and the SEO is capable of evangelizing the importance of his/her recommendations without downplaying the importance and passion of the Designers involved.

No, but I believe they are equally important.
First of all, a responsive design is a must these days, but not only that, you can apply all the SEO techniques in the world nowadays, if people will land on a webpage looking like it's the 90's again, they will probably not come back. There are certain trends in webdesign every good web designer should know about. For instance, using 100 gif images on your index page and have your text blink until your eye pop out - not a good idea!

SEO and web design both are important as only a good design does not drive enough traffic to a website or only an SEO does not work with a bad design.Design an impressive site with increase in brand visibility performing SEO and SMO of the site leads to maximum traffic on the site.

seo is and always will be more important than web design because google send bots not humans to scan the site design ... so in design you need to just follow some basic guidelines so that the code will be optimized for seo ........

surely there are other methods but most of them are just bot traffic and if you need some genuine real people traffic you need to spend good amount of money on solo ads ... so it is best to do seo it is less costly than buying traffic or bringing traffic from some illegal methods ....

Both web design and seo are important. If your site is not responsive, faster, clean coded and seo ready you will not get constant visitor with doing proper visitor.
Another if you only do seo not web design it will also not good. Because you should give them user friendly navigation. So they will love to stay on your site more.

There is no doubt that it is very important to make a design after consulting an SEO professional to make sure that you don't make critical mistakes which will stop you to get good search engine rankings, there is no point of having a fantastic looking website without having traffic on it. What is the point of having a spectacular website if only you are going to see it. Web designers (or developers) claim that rankings are not everything, that SEOs often use aggressive techniques to manipulate rankings and can most probably guarantee snake oil more than anything. SEOs, on the other hand, claim that Web designers often make their life difficult with poor coding and have little to no knowledge of SEO.

Let's put it this way, if you had the best web design in the world but no effective marketing for it, no one will buy from you. Ever.

On the other hand, if you had a mediocre web design but the best SEO results in the world, you will get sales, but it will be a TINY fraction of what you could have gotten if you had a highly converting website design instead.

So both

is good.
