[Solved] Is it possible to build a wordpress site offline?

I have a friend who wants me to build them a wordpress site although they don't want their existing site to have any downtime.

So my question is essentially the same as the title... How can I build a wordpress site offline?

I would recommend you just build it on a subdomain and then once it's done, just transfer it over to the main domain with Duplicator. It's an awesome plugin that I use all the time to transfer sites and you can have the site transferred over to the main domain within minutes.

But yes it is possible to do it offline with XAMPP...Personally I find it to be a pain in the butt (which is why I use Duplicator) but I'm sure other designers would disagree with me.

  If you're on Mac, I recommend MAMP. I've been using it for a while now to create websites locally.

You can do this in many ways.
- The easier is to host it externally, but not connect the DNS. Use hosts locally.
- Or localhost it. But then you have to figure out migration when done.
- Subdomain hosting is the worst. After developed, you have to go back and change lots of things to again make it work in the final location.

Of the local methods, I agree, MAMP is the best. (WAMP often screws up your Windows desktop.)

I would suggest you use Wamp, I have it and I use it and I have never had any problems with it. Neither has the person who recommended it to me. This is the first time I hear someone has a problem with it... hmm..

You can download it and, for instructions on how to use it, either look for tutorials online or use their forums.

All the software suggested above above works well and i would like to add XAMPP Lite, which basically leaves out a couple of less used features and should be sufficient for 95% of users and has a smaller footprint.

For a beginner desktop WordPress user or any pro that builds occasionally on localhost I would suggest InstantWP

Its free, self contained and portable. Last time I used it was about 3 revision back and it did everything you need for desktop server. Migrate site to live when done.
Hint: don't pass on it till you try it. He's too modest on the site.

Caveat: He supports the software by the sale of an ebook with exact details on usage, but most of the help in on the site except for how to migrate to live and not sure what else he adds.
Any WP user will know how to do that and I don't think I need to reveal here but I could summarize it in one word.

I use this one(for Windows): "instant WP". It's a freeware and no installation is needed.
Just run a Google search and you'll get it.

I use MAMP on windows. if you have the pro version you can allowed your friend to preview the site remotely. If you don't want to pay for the pro version. I would just build it in a sub domain like Chantal recommended.

If you build it in a subdomain don't forget to block robots from indexing this site while on development.

If you have a server, you can build on your server and restrict access to it. That's essentially the same as having it offline as no one would be able to access it.

You easily can build the website offline. Just take one dummy /temporary domain or you can create the sub folder or sub domain of the actual domain where you want to replace the site with the wordpess then install the Wordpress on that link and perform your job there once it is completed then replace the folders or files and new site will be up and running
