Starting A Web Design Business For Clients

I have been designing Wordpress sites now for many years and I have gotten very good at designing various types of sites. Everything from sales pages to membership websites.

I am looking to start a business where I take on clients to design or re-design their sites for them. However, I have never done this type of business before.

My question is: Do I ask them for their login info to their website so I can access their Wordpress dashboard? I can see how they would be some issues with just giving out their info to a random person.

Thank You!

Well once you establish a trusting relationship and credibility with your client then you wouldn't be a random person anymore, right?

    Problem solved

I have been developing site for clients for the past 4 years. Usually after just a phone conversation they are willing to hand over passwords. If they are not so willing you could develop the new site on your server and then move it to their server once it is done!

  • I they are concerned, advise them to change the password after you have finished. This is good security practice as well.

You should go ahead and start it. You should ask for wordpress login as well as cpanel login. When you are doing business you have to ask it and client have to give it. Its all depend how you convince your client. Once you finished with your work do ask your client to change it

      Hi Stryker 14!

A lot of small business owners don't have a Wordpress site so you'd be starting from scratch with the design and implementation so log-ins wouldn't be an issue.

Also, you'll most likely be building custom sites so again, accessing something already in existence wouldn't matter.

As you're just starting out with the business idea, I'd develop some generic wordpress sites for different niches -- landscapers, florists, dentists, vets, etc. so you can offer various packages and have a range of prices.

Not everyone needs all the bells and whistles which some wordpress themes offer and then there's all the plug-ins which do all kinds of things.

Also, managing the site could also be part of your business plan that you'd offer a prospective client.

      Hope this helps!

I would advise to create different custom templates in your own wordpress account. Once completed, you can then export the template files to your computer and sell the designs you created to your customers. All you would need to do is send them the template file to upload to their own wordpress blog.

Why not ask for details. This for me is the only way I have been able to solve website issues. i found dealing with skype, emails etc can waste and hour of time to fix something that 90% of the time takes about 10 minutes of actual time.
You have to have credibility and have generated some trust thought before people will give out such personal data that allows a view into perhaps some personal data. Good luck though because plenty of sites are messed up
