Google and mobile

I got a note from google the other day saying all the pages of my main site aren't optimized for mobile, really meaning phone. Most of the time I don't really care about this as according to google analytics I might get 2 people look at my site on there phone out of 1000 viewers so most of the time i think what do I care.

They did say they would list my site an not mobile friendly and rank my site accordingly for people using phones. What my real question is will they rank my site lower on a regular computer as well even though they said it will rank lower only on a phone.

Also they did say I could fix this by inserting some code but then went on to say put the code in while building the site and if the site has been around for 5 years how in the world would I do this.

As I said they did recommend putting in some code but didn't say where or if I needed to put into every page or just the master page. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    Hi there,
    Basically your site needs to be mobile friendly or Google will remove your site from mobile search. I'm not sure what code you're referring to so I can't tell you where you need to place it. Even though you're not getting much in the way of mobile traffic to your site. It would be in your best interest to have a mobile friendly website.

    There are different ways to accomplish this.

    1- Responsive Design- (Same url same content)You will hear a lot of people saying that responsive is preferred by Google and that your site will rank better. That's not true. What Google said was they thought it was the best option because it worked well for Google but other options work just as well and having a responsive site does not do anything for your page rank.

    2- Dynamic/Adaptive (Same url but different content)

    3- Separate mobile site(different url your site's content needs to be redirected to a mobile version)

    I don't know what kind of site you have so it's difficult to offer a suggestion. Other options are sites like Dudamobile.com if you want a quick way to go mobile.

  • For the upcoming google's update they are concentrating on the mobile version of the website, if your site is not mobile friendly then your site will suffer with the ranks on mobile devices.It is better to have a mobile version of the site, have a mobile version of your website.Insert a code in your site as they suggested, put the code in header or footer, which will cover all the pages of your website.
  • Here is a link that google gave me with a short video telling me what to do https://developers.google.com/web/fu...-fundamentals/ , they talk about meta viewport and something about a breakpoint but don't say anything about where to put it. I kind of find it hard to believe that putting in these couple codes will fix everything and make my site mobile friendly. My site is Italian Travel and Vacation planning Information. It shows up on tablets just fine and have looked at it on many different types as I checked my site out on friends different tablets. Mark

    • It is extremely important for sites that have mobile traffic to make sure they are mobile friendly or otherwise on April 24 they will lose their mobile traffic.

  • Make sure you don't have every page on your website redirect to the same mobile "home page". You want to have each page redirect to it's dedicated mobile page. Otherwise, there is a chance Google will penalize your website for improper mobile redirects.
  • I have to admit, I have no idea what that code is, are you sure they said that?
    For a website to be mobile friendly, you need to adjust the website's design. Either modify it or change your theme as your website needs to be responsive.
    Even if you don't get a lot of traffic from people using their phones now, you might in the future.
