As a designer, what do you recommend for absolute must have software? I know some of the very simple basics using Gimp but I would like to learn more. I don't have any software in line of design work so I thought I'd ask here to see what you all think are must haves. I'd love free or very inexpensive software if at all possible. I do intend to get PhotoShop but that's not an option right at the moment.

I'll suggest you to try Gimp with a Gnu/linux OS, runs faster than in a windows enviroment. If you study the tutorials and look for the plugins you will be able to extend your copy of Gimp you will not miss Photoshop is you dedicate enough time with Gimp.

If you want to learn 3d Blender is a nice free software.

There is just no "a must " in design softwares for many opensource and commercial softwares you have to learn, it is just in the way you use them and express the art.

how about CCLEANER? It gets rid of needless files and other clutter, handles cookies, covers your browsing tracks, tunes up your registry, defragments your hard drive and uninstalls programs.

I do not argue with this list. This is awesome. But for Anti-Virus Software, AVG Anti Virus does not satisfy my need. It can't detect some worms and viruses even if it is updated daily.

Eset or Avira are better for me.

GIMP is not and never will be, as good as Photoshop, no matter what anyone says.

My advice, is to get Photoshop. How you lay your hands on a copy is entirely up to you, but there are always ways.

Photoshop CS5 (a lot of new significant changes in CS5)!
If you're into vectors, use illustrator
If you're into page layouts, use InDesign

      That's all you really need.

I also forgot. If you're into vector arts, you can buy an intuos tablet, it works well with illustrator, correl, etc.

All I have to say about Gimp is that the word "gimp" means "crippled," and that Gimp is a very appropriately named piece of software...

(For a designer) I can recommend Xnview for batch image processing. You can do things like resize, crop, add effects, converts etc. (tons of more) on many of images once by ease. It's a nice image viewer also.

Well dreamveawer is a must for me, though you can use free html editor such as coffee cup. Thats about the only sofware I require for pure html and php creation. But yes, photoshop is also a must for any type of graphic design. Gimp is a free alternative as I am sure you know, but for video marketing, I would say sony vegas. I could go on FOREVER. lol It just depends on how you intend to make money online. But antivurs software(lol) is something you need regardless. I use webroot and it was 30 dollars USD I think. Pretty cheap.
