    • Nice post Richard. Hadn't thought of using the same header banner, or a section of it, on other sites or top of each page. I agree using an Avatar that actually looks like you, as against a logo or caricature, is pretty essential for gaining visitor confidence as well as recognition. Especially if you are using retargetting.
      Thanks for the tip.

  • Nice post my friend. We've been moving in the same circles and seeing quite a bit of each other recently You are putting out some great value which is always good to see.

Your blog looks great. Some people on this forum may look to add a pop up for collecting email addresses. I'm working on this myself right now but I'm just adding the final touches to make it something offering high value. See you soon.

    • Check, check and check.

I would also add that it's good to have a video on your Welcome page too. I created an introduction video for mine so I could speak to my audience.

I also have a video on my More About Me page that's more personal, nothing related to business. I think that helps your visitors get to know a little more about you, so they know that you're a "real" person.

    • Yes - a pop-up is always good.. I always see my blog as work in progress. If I see something to add I will find a work-around. Thanks for the suggestion Paul.

    • Hi Rich

You are so right - I think the real point is to enjoy the experience of giving out what you have learned to help others. I see knowledge as a bit like water. If you dam it up and keep it for yourself, it ends up becoming stagnant because it had stopped flowing. I guess money is the same - it also needs to flow and circulate as well.

By the way, where's your avatar photo?
  • Richard, I really appreciate how you offer help to others, keep it up.

One thing I miss is my handsome mug (lol) above the fold...

Loved the podcast episode by the way!

    • Hi Doug

Like I said to Rich, I think the real point is to enjoy the experience of what we are doing, and not become lost in the desperation that so many have - to make money at all costs. I am convinced that the old saying of 'don't chase money - let money chase you' has to be right. It's certainly how I see it.

I'll be checking to see if your mug is above the fold again

  • I agree, though I don't use an avatar haha
I believe that using a photo like you've said is most likely to increase trust, true.
It is like you are not hiding anything, you are confident on whatever you say or do.

  • Rich,

A really helpful post, and I think it hits on something that is really key in business.

it is about consistency and taking care of the seemingly small things (micro decisions if you like) that most people either don't see or don't think are important. Branding (and consistency of branding) is something that successful businesses of all sizes do really well, so well in fact that you don't even notice it.

If you get a chance, check out Pay Flynn's Smart Passive Income blog. Pat talks about a strategy that is called "Be Everywhere" (I think) and branding appears heavily there too.

Anyway, I'm off to go and brand all my social media stuff like I should have done ages ago. Its all about Micro Decisions people!

    • Totally agree with that Pickle04

I see no difference at all between running a gift shop and running an online business. The only difference is the staggering reach of the internet. You still need to build a reputation and gain market trust. You still need to be polite and helpful, and not corner people and try to extract their money. You still need to promote your business and put your amazing offers and opportunities in front of customers and you have to go out and find people, tell them and show them what you do, and invite them to your store and make them feel comfortable.

I was on holiday in Turkey once and this guy invited me in to his shop and showed me his carpets. He asked me where I lived, and said he could arrange delivery of anything I purchased easily. He made me some tea and we sat down while he introduced his family and all his workers who wove the carpets. There was one rug I really liked.

I told him I didn't want to buy anything at the start of my holiday but that I might look in after two weeks. On the last day of my holiday I had forgotten all about this, and as I walked out of my hotel he 'happened' to be passing.

"Hi Richard" he asked (remembered my name = good biz) "How was your holiday? Did you visit XYZ? What did you think of our country?"

He asked me to come for tea and say goodbye to his family if I had time. Yes I did buy the rug!! And no he didn't sell it to me - I bought it - honestly I did. lol
