I purchased a business about a year ago and one of the assets was the website. However I have not been happy with the performance particularly with the back end customer management and tracking. I was able to purchase a new domain that fits my market and had a new website developed. Now I need to determine the best way to transition.

I own the old domain and it is registered under my company with Godaddy. But the site is currently hosted by the company that the former owner used. Now I need to decide my next steps so I do not lose all my SEO.

Initially I will just shut down the registration on the old website and direct them to my new one but keep the site live. My question is, if I have 301 redirects used to point to my new website does the actual site need to remain up. I get the feeling the current host will give me a hassle trying to move so I want to take that out of their hands. Also, can I have the old domain show in the web browser on the redirect or does it not matter. This part is beyond my pay grade so any recommendations or insight would be appreciated.
#301 #redirect

If you control that domain name you don't actually need a site up if the domain registrar has a forwarding service with 301 redirect capabilities.

If you don't control that domain name you are out of luck.

If you do control that domain name but nor capabilities to forward through the registrar, park it and redirect through your .htaccess

Thank you. Yes I control the domain and I can move it and do the redirect via htaccess.

Just for my clarification. After I do this the new website will take over as far as the onpage SEO but I am preserving my backlinks from the old site to the new one.

The only reason to redirect is for backlinks and for those that may have bookmarked the site correct?

If you need to change the URL of a page as it is shown in search engine results, we recommend that you use a server-side 301 redirect. This is the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to the correct page. The 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location.
