Hi everyone.

This is my first post, having found this forum on one of my many overwhelming and confusing trawls through cyberspace looking for clues about the host I should be using.

Basically, we have a website for our band, e-god, at egod.tv

For some time now, a friend has been helping us out with the design and maintenance, but there is no substitute for being able to control it hands-on, a task which I have set myself to do from scratch, or near enough scratch. I'm now at that point where I'm deciding where to move the site, if at all. It's presently hosted by streamline.net, and we have registered our domain names there - two for e-god and one other - irishrenovations.net for renovations that we were doing in Ireland.

We also sell CDs (and downloads, which are all free right now, so go and grab some!) from the e-god site, so will need a shopping cart etc.

We plan to do a lot of our publicity and sales on the Internet, but streamline.net do not allow mass mailouts. We are not spamming - these are people who have requested to be on our mailing list, but still it's a pain to have to send out a few here and a few there if we have any gigs/news. Is there a host who would be better for this? I have been looking at Godaddy and SiteBuildIt, and they both seem very impressive, but I have no idea if I'm on the right track.

If you were doing a band website, who would you get to host it?

Thanks so much in advance. I have a few more questions, but I'll leave this post relatively simple for now.

Your hosting company shouldn't be able to dictate wether or not you have a mailing list. Personally I use (and a lot of people on here do as well) hostgator as a host and a third party such as Aweber or Get Response as a mailing list provider.

Thanks so much Chris. Well, streamline have a contacts facility, which we have been using as the mailing list, and which is very limited in function, but what you suggest seems a much better idea, and I shall check it out. Apologies if my questions seem ridiculously basic, but I'm very new to this, and learning fast! :-)
