Best location for RSS link?

Just added RSS feed to my static website.

A few questions:

Where is the best place to locate the RSS icon/link?

Is it okay to place it inside the header tag where your main keyword phrase and article title are?

I inserted the RSS icon/link with right alignment so that you would have the title of your article or page and then to the right of it the RSS icon.

Will Google penalize you for having a separate icon/link in the header tag?

Is there a better way to positioning your RSS icon without interfering with your header tag or ruining the way the page looks?

Thanks,
JT

In general, and i am not a RSS expert, but usually you want your RSS and Newsletter join items to be above the fold on your webpage and on the right side. Even working in a Z pattern in the fold is a bit more of an advanced techniue. I personally work more on sign up importance than RSS, but that is become my Niche is not big on RSS.

Hopefully someone will come along with a little better info, but in short determine how important RSS is with your audience. If it is very important than make the image/size a big feature and above the fold. The rest I think would make small differences depending on niche and who you talk to.

Thanks. Yes, I understand upper right above the fold is better. What do you mean by Z pattern?

Still would like to know from anyone out there if it makes a difference if the RSS icon image is actually inside the <h1> tag. I'm just wondering if that in any way diminishes the value of having your main keyword phrase in the <h1> tag in Google's eyes.

I don't see any other way to get the RSS icon/link in the upper right corner of the page. Is there another way to do this without including it in the <h1> tag or in the header/banner itself?
