Why employee needs Cpanel access?

I'm confused, I do my fair share of wordpress sites for clients and sometimes outsource help on upwork, my new employee is from india and has built a couple sites for me but always insists on getting cpanel access to "change the style" shouldn't he be able to do this from the wordpress dashboard? Why do outsourced employees seem to insist on getting cpanel access?

  • Cpanel Access has nothing to do with the style of wordpress. So long as they have access to the WP dashboard and/or ftp they can make any style changes. The only reason I can think of for needing cpanel access is to access the databases. Even then that should be something that can be managed via phpMyAdmin.

  • If the site is already setup with basic WP, then they only need WP and an ftp account. create an FTP account and WP password for them only and delete when done.
    A database issue may require Cpanel access.

    Preferably if you're getting site built or heavy makeover, have it built on desktop and get a backup file that you can install from in-house.

  • The only reason I can think of he wanting cPanel Access is to change your password and see that they are curious about logging for some kind of unfortunate reason. I would be very careful about giving out access to cPanel to clients, especially when they only need access to wordpress admin.


    You can't change the style from cPanel for wordpress. its only wordpress admin you need.


    From an end users perspective, they sound like they are being nosey.

  • There is no need for cPanel access for anything to do with Wordpress.
  • Sometimes back files need to be edited, either through FTP or c-panel. If your worried just set up an account through FTP, ask your host provider for a tutorial on that setup.
  • FTP Access is all they should need, i would need more than the wp dashboard to customize a site due to wp dashboard not being able to create new files ect. However there are plugins that allow an ftp like system from the wp dashboard.
  • Sometimes plug-ins or themes may need modification in files or database tables that may not be possible from within WP admin.

    Also developers sometimes copy the full site from the hosting (files and database), make changes in them on their local setup and test things before they upload and replace the existing staff on the server. It is a common practice and saves a lot of time for them.

    I would suggest you not to give them cPanel access unless it is absolutely necessary. Ask them directly if they need to access the files or the database. If it is only the files, then you can create and give them FTP account.

    • You can do most things with just WordPress access.
      To manipulate a lot of data in a online shopping site, you want myPhpAdmin access which comes through cpanel.
      Suppose I am optimizing the images in a site. I will want to copy the present image folders to backup image folders so that I can restore any that don't look right when I make the others smaller. That is best done through cpanel.Filezilla is not good for copying over folders.
      It is relatively safe to give cpanel access to outsourcers as long as
      1) you have a full site backup offline
      2)you don't cheat them and
      3)you don't give them the billing password (in some cases they may need this to talk to hosting support) It should not be given out if you have credit card info stored in your hosts billing system
