Wordpress makes me insane.

Is there a coherent guide on modding wordpress themes? I'm not a designer, I usually hire people for this but I'm trying to figure this out myself.

Is there a great course, video, or site in general you guys would recommend here? I just went through 4 chrome plugins and deleted them all, firebug also drives me insane.

I'm trying to mod the genesis base theme (creating my own child theme) and everything seems like it takes me 3 hours of hunting around on google to find he answer. It's really frustrating. I now know why I just pay people to do this.

I was going to suggest using browser plugins and add-on to check the CSS, but your'e already doing that.

What exactly are you trying to mod? Yes it can take time, but plug-ins like Firebug work for me. Just track down the right CSS, and edit it in your child theme. Actually there is a ton of Genesis stuff out there, hook maps, ect. Sure it take time, but that's part of learning, no?

For me, I find a theme or child theme that is close and edit that. Less mess and fuss.

You of course need a good handle on CSS if you want to do much.

And I agree, if you have the cash, pay some one else to do it. Depends on if you have more time or more money

One of the best ways to learn wordpress which I have done for myself. I learnt building landing pages and also learning to build a website for myself is looking at a lot of YouTube videos. Try finding videos on modifying Genesis themes. The other way around is ask the Genesis themes forum guys about everything(i dont know if they have a forum, but they should). If you ask about every small part of modifying they might help you.
Take a week about 7days learning wordpress. Read the whole documentation and try understanding everything real time by going to all that is mentioned in the documentation. You should do the same with YouTube videos.
I did the same learnt for 7days did nothing but researched and learnt everything on my own wordpress. Now I can do it effectively. It's difficult when you want to launch something immediately. But a better idea is be patient learn it and you would be good in a month.

      Hope this helps!

Yeah I found some guides on how the hooks/filters work in genesis, I knew how they worked in WP (basically the same way.) I actually found a guide to editing the genesis child CSS, which was brilliant, pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Amazing how much information people give away these days. The CSS is 1400 lines, I saw that and almost fell out of my chair.

It's definitely worth learning it, I can easily come up with a child theme that suits my needs and then use it on multiple sites just tweaking minor stuff.

A few things I was trying to mod were the category pages (I want them to be custom landing pages per category not just a list of content) the menus, footer, pretty much everything

I used to completely hate wordpress, now that I'm actually learning the genesis framework and not just hiring somebody to come up with a custom theme, I'm really liking genesis, but I will always hate wordpress

Ya, 1400 lines of code can be daunting. One thing I recently realized is that many of the browser plugin's give line numbers and the css file. Took me this long to see that..lol Sure makes it easier.

As for landing pages, you know you can use templates, thought genesis came with several templates, least many of the genesis child theme's do, which you can set per page or post. Or you can make your own templates. Well, sure you know that.

Can't say I love Wordpress, but after years of coding html and a little PHP by hand, I am very grateful for Wordpress. Better things to do than spend too much time editing or creating code.

It's very easy and many people fall into the trap of wasting WAY TOO much time coding or tweaking when they really don't need to. They give all kinds of reasons (good in their mind or to justify), but usually in the end they are wasting valuable time.

        Well, just my opinions
