Backing up WordPress

I expect there are videos on YouTube to see how this is done, but does anyone have any hints or tips when it comes to backing up a WordPress site?

I know how to back up the database for my blog. I need to make it a priority now to back up my settings for the WordPress site.

Are there just a few configuration files that need to be saved or does it require the whole site to be backed up from which to perform a restore?

I lost one site once because of Hosting problems and although I had copied all the server files to a folder on my computer I was not able to recover my site. I expect there might be more to it than that.

Dave you should also keep a copy of the wp-content folder. It holds your themes, plugins and the uploads folder. The uploads folder contains any images you uploaded and added into posts. The .htaccess (if you have one) and wp-config.php files that has the configuration (database) settings are in the blogs main directory, those don't change once you have it setup so one time backup of those is fine.

The themes and plugins can be downloaded again if you really need to. But if you customize any themes you should backup the theme every time you tweak its files. And again if you upload a lot of images you should backup the uploads folder on a regular basis.

  I have saved the two webpages for reference and have saved my wp-content folder.
  
  I hope never to have to perform a restore, but if I do I will come asking on the forum for help.

  Just a suggestion... I have multiple sites (4 currently) on the same host and I find it much easier to do the full cpanel backup. Then if anything goes wrong (probably will at some point in time since i'm always tweaking and tweaking), I can get my host to do a full restore.
  
  Of course, this works only if you're on cpanel. Just a few clicks to backup the whole thing.
  
  And, being rather paranoid myself, I set it up to backup everyday automatically as well.

I know in your case you may have sorted it but I thought I would still share for collective knowledge. I usually install WP DB Backup plugin and have it email me the entire blog and settings weekly/daily depending how often the site is updated and then make a save via FTP of the wp-content folder each time I make any structural changes.
