How did you learn

For about 5 or 6 yrs now I've been wanting to do the whole "Internet" thing. I went to college to be a nurse, but the whole time I thought about how i should have went into something to do with Web Development, Internet marketing or something. I graduated as a nurse, but I still think about how i shoulda, coulda, woulda.

I thought about taking classes or going to school part time or something to learn more. But I'm curious as to how everyone else learned? Did you go to a brick and mortar college, online, self taught, or what?

    I started with video tutorials. I recommend these channels: LearnCode.academy, LevelUpTuts
    Also, you can begin to learn programming with the help of web-services like Codecademy
    Just start from some basics, like HTML/CSS for web development, or C++ for desktop

    When I started online, the first thing I learned was Wordpress. I felt this would be my biggest asset (for me). I figured that if I wanted to become a internet marketer, it wouldn't be a bad idea to know a few things about setting up a blog.

    I took a course online (it doesn't exist anymore) and then got a few web design jobs on Elance. This evolved into more and more work. For a few years, that's all I did and then I got sick of it. I got to the point where I hated designing websites/blogs for other people - even though I was my own boss, I still felt like I was working for others.

    Now I just build my own websites

      I went to college - but not for IM....this is totally self taught and had some good mentors along the way. MANY long days and nights working and figuring stuff out. Contrary to what many of the sales pages tell you - this stuff is WORK.

      Looking at your previous posts you are looking at too much - you mention drop shipping and private label and selling sites....etc.

      Pick one thing and learn to do it. If you want to build a good authority or a WP blog, there is plenty of free info online for you to learn it.

      If you want to sell products for affiliate commissions - you can learn that, too.

      Often IM is the "greener grass on the other side" because you've heard a little or read a little here and there. It's a business and it takes focus and work and you do what you have to do. Until you feel you have an understanding of what to do - and the focus to stick to one thing and get it done - don't quit your day job.

      Working online is the perfect second job or hobby you can do while you earn a living with your day job. For many of us, after a while the IM income was sufficient to leave the day job and that's great, too.

        Thanks for the replies. Didn't realize a lot of people were self taught. I think what I'd like to do is the amazon fba thing as well as maybe eventually private label type stuff. But eventually I'd like to have my own website to go with my fba/private label. Right now I'm trying to learn about fba/private label. Then later learn the web design part as much as I can.

          I learned a lot from using this forum, using the search feature to research various topics. Beware of the shiny object syndrome while doing this. There are some very good course and free blogs that can teach a lot about FBA or other topics.


          As for courses do not jump on the first one you see as some that cost more may offer less. Do your research and you will find what you need.

    Congratulations on getting your Nursing Degree.

    Most people are self taught. Some people get lucky and find a mentor that will work with them. Be careful with paying someone to mentor you.

    Just don't get sucked into thinking you need to buy this course or that course or pay for information when you can get it free with a little research. There is much good information on how to do things without spending tons of money.

    Also, stay focused on each marketing method until you get a handle on each one. It's too easy to run into a snag and then get coaxed into approaching things from a different angle, and then another, and another and so on - and finally not getting anywhere and then losing focus and giving up. It happens to all of us, especially me.

    As far as I know, there's no brick and mortar school offering courses on IM.

    Everyone here is self taught. From Humble Joe making $10/mo to Joe Millionaire making six figures online, they're all self taught.

    I learn web designing by taking personal coaching. I think if you really wanted to learn then you should go for personal coaching...

    I think the majority of people doing IM either learned most of it on their own or paid for one of the online courses to maybe learn what they couldn't figure out themselves or from start to finish. There are a lot of them out there and vary widely in price and content. Some will teach you the entire gambit of IM and some will focus on only one aspect of IM.
