My Website Is Not Getting Traffic- Is this normal? Please help

I have been slaving on a hot keyboard for about 3 months now to build a content rich website for personal branding. Down the road, I intend to monetize by selling my eBook, some affiliate products and other suitable products.

But here is the problem: No one seems to have visited my site. For now, I am targeting keywords and plan to try other traffic building strategies once the story I am telling comes out. So far I have about 25 pages:
I guess these are my questions:
1) While I know that it takes time, is this a normal phenomenon these days? What is realistic?
2) What can I improve on this website to make it more appealing? Is there something that I am not clicking?
3) What is the best approach for some one trying to build a content rich website today? I still don't know much about the complicated stuff. I just know the basics for content building.

This is the Website: Soul Food For Real Women - Inspirations For Real Women

Thank you so much in advance.

P.S: Back in the 2007, I built a website with Site build it and within three months, doing the same amount of work, I had some reasonable traffic and even made ~$500. But of course, most things are automated there and I did not do much. Is the competition just too stiff these days, or there is something I am missing?

  • Try adding some more photos. Keep your site as appealing as possible.

Try adding some videos or testimonials about your product. Be more creative.

  • have you tried paid traffic? you can use fb ads to do that. You can also create your own fan page and start promoting it
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Get more targeted traffic to your site. Create a fanpage and promote it with Facebook PPC. Buy more traffic from Twitter and other social networking sites.

Advertise your site in women's forums too.

You will have targeted traffic with these and when you are selling great stuff to your audience, sales are expected!

You can take this even further and capture your visitors' emails in exchange for some kind of free gift then market to them through emails.

    • You said nothing about how you're promoting your content? If you build it, they will come, doesn't quite work in marketing.

  • Try solo ads , even if you dont have a big budget, you will get traffic. once you have some sales invest in more solo ads and so on and so on untill you build up a following.
Invest in yourself and you will reap the rewards.

  • So you have learned Online Marketing Lesson #1:

The world's greatest content is completely useless in a vacuum.

Next time, when you come up with a new project, begin with the question: "How will traffic arrive at this platform?"

    Figure that out FIRST.

Mediocre content hooked up to a substantial and pre-qualified traffic source out-performs fantastic content attached to a tiny amount of poor-quality traffic.

Seems obvious. But then why did you do what you did? (Which is very common.)

Online Marketing has two components: Traffic and Conversion.

You have some of the Conversion part. Now you need the Traffic chunk taken care of.

    • Hey Annette,
You have a really good story, and I think it could inspire women.

Have you tried gaining readers through Social media ?? Also, going to similar blogs in the 'Self Help for Women' niche and attracting followers that way could be beneficial...i.e guest posting and blog commenting .

    • Hi Jason,
Actually a few years back, if you built content, they would come. I made some decent income solely doing that.... but what you say about hooking content to a substantial but and pre-qualified traffic absolutely makes sense.
  • Yes setu up a facebook fan page and start by liking other pages too to broaden your reach. Then write articles on your fanpage and promote the page as well as your articles with facebook's PPC. You can start with as little as $5 per day and its a good way of gaining followers.

Also as someone pointed out, create an optin linked to an autoresponder so that you can contact and market to your list later on (VERY important)

    • Hi Gerhard,

Having been online for a while, I couldn't agree more with the importance of an autoresponder. Was just buying a little time to see how the traffic builds... but before I intensify my marketing campaigns, I will definitely do that.

    • Sorry, I hit return and it posted.

I also built a couple of profitable sites with Site Build It back in 2007. I was making decent money with those sites and then I was slapped by the google algorithm changes.

Today it is very different. You still need to create really good content, but now you need to spend a lot of time promoting that content.

That means guest posting and building quality backlinks to your content.

I use to try to produce 3-5 search engine optimized articles or posts a week. Now I'll produce 1 or 2 and spend the rest of my time trying to promote that content.

Also, SEO rules have changed a lot since the SBI days. It used to be we would use the keywords pretty extensively throughout the content, now keyword density is kept below 2%.

If you are using WordPress, I would suggest Yoast SEO plugin for helping with your on page SEO.

I also use Long Tail Pro keyword research tool and have found it to be invaluable. It provides much more relevant information than the google adwords tool. It provides the data that you need in order to determine which keywords you can easily rank for. Similar to Brainstorm It was in SBI only better.

You've got a great concept, keep up the hard work!

  • Time to dive deep in PPC I guess. Fast results and via tweaking the ROI can be splendid.
  • Two things are basically involved in getting traffic to your website.
  • Two things are involved in getting traffic to a website.(1) the quality of the content and (2) the targeted keywords. You need to write quality contend that is engaging before google will rank your site. You also need to target low competition keywords, once you have done these basics, you will surely get traffic.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • One thing you can do is check where your webpage shows up in a search, there are a lot of page checkers not rank checkers that will show you where your site shows up. Your site could be ranked at lets say 150 which means 149 sites show up in a search of your keywords before your site does. That means your site would be way back on page 15 at the bottom and who is looking there.

Once you know where your site is and if you are going to relay on organic searches for traffic you can then look to see who is on page one position one and see how they put there site together, what articles are on the site, you can do a page source look up to see their site description and what their keywords are.

Do you have any backlinks, as someone said if you aren't only using SEO to get traffic have you tried any solo ads to see what happens. There are a lot more ways to get traffic to your site if you have money to spend then there is with just putting up a site and writing articles and making comments on forums and blogs you just have to decide which one is wright for you.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Social media is where it's at today.

Get out there and promote yourself. Get in FB's search results.
  • You have to pay for traffic or hustle to get traffic. Spending money is the route people hate to take but if you believe in your site then you shouldn't have a problem doing that. If you hustle you should be trying to contact bloggers in your niche and comment on related blog, maybe make youtube views or interact with people on yahoo answers. These tasks won't cost much money just a lot of time.

You definitely should be taking some action. Don't wait for visitors because the might never come.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Very inspiring story. I agree with the previous posters about guest posting on blogs in a similar niche. A Facebook fanpage can also help alot with targeted traffic. I would also recommend starting a Youtube channel and posting at least weekly videos on topics related to your blog posts or even putting together your own inspirational videos like the one already on your site. I was having a similar issue with one of my websites and starting a youtube channel worked wonders for driving traffic. Just my two cents. Best of luck to you.

  • Hi...

Well done for getting this far... some don't make this far and plus they would moved onto the next shiny object. I think you are about 10% through your journey. Don't give up! The site is average. Do not concentrate on SEO solely. Go and look at your competition and see what they are doing and how their sites are built.

    1. Why would I want to come to your site and not go to top sites on Googles first page or any other authority site that has been around years?

If you can answer that then 90% of your problems are solved!

    2. What will you do to keep me coming to your site?

Now if you pass these two hurdles... you can think about selling to these people and advertising, monetizing, etc, etc, etc!

Good luck and I wish you well and success!

    • [ 2 ] Thanks
  • Be more active on social media. Most of my traffic now comes from Facebook, Youtube and Instagram. Very little comes from organic search. You may also want to look into paid advertising.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I don't think you wasted time on it. You would always need good content on your website and you already done it.

If I was in your position I would now write and publish less content on my own website, and publish content in other websites. Look for good guest posting opportunities that will allow you to get some traffic and backlinks.

Also try to get some backlinks to your posts. Look to your competitors backlinks, and try to get those exact same links for yourself.

This is a marathon, not a sprint

  • PPC, solo ads, banner ads in related forums, facebook ads...
  • Yes you can get visitors without backlinks or promotion whatsoever, but you will need tons and tons of good quality content. This way you'll rank on a lot of long tail keywords.

25 pages is not nearly enough.

Keep producing quality content, do keyword research, learn about on-page/off-page SEO ... as a bonus: learn social media promotion (free not paid).

  • Hi, hope you don't mind some site design thoughts?

That's a nice looking site (love the image) but it did take me a few minutes to work out what the site was about. This might just be because I'm a bloke, so apologies in advance!

Just my thoughts but the 'Soul Food 4 Real Women' is too much in the background for me, it doesn't really stand out, a darker color might work better.

Have you though about having a tag line/sub-title as well. Just something that sums up what the site is about, there's a nice space there on the left!

Articles look good and once I started to flick through the site it all made sense, I just think having that little something extra in the header would really catch attention and make visitors want to look at the rest of the site.

Traffic! As others have said, you need to be digging into the niche and finding where your targeted audience hang out.

Have you identified any forums or blogs where ladies will be interested in your content?

That would be a great start but make sure you get involved on these sites and don't overly promote your site, at least not at first (can you have a signature on these forums that points to your website?).

I would also say that now is a great time for you to start building a list! It's a bit of work at first but if you aim to do this before you start to generate traffic then you're all setup to capture your site visitors from day one.

You'll find some great tips in the email marketing threads here on Warrior.

Hope some of this helps. Nice site with a lot of potential.

    Cheers

  • Waiting for free traffic can be difficult and may never happen. Its better to buy traffic. you can get 1000's of visiter's by tomorrow by buying it. If you wait for free sources the same amount of traffic can take months, if at all.

The downside to paid traffic is obviously you need money, but with a good offer you will be able to make your money back.

Just make sure you have a way to make money back quickly when buying traffic and the cost wont matter anymore.

Please revise the entire website and make it search-engine friendly as much as possible. Your logo image should have alt tag "Soul Food" either "Annette Tush" and also give a meaningful file name to all images.

    • Hi Annette

Most responses in this thread advise you to increase the promotion of your site. It's not a bad idea. But...

I do not think your website as it is now can be successful... Sorry to say this.

If I were in your shoes, here's what I would do ...

      1) I think the website is not targeted enough (no specific niche). I would divide it into three different websites: women and money, women and love, and women and weight loss. (or maybe four websites? Maybe I would add women and self-help or personal growth?)

      2) I would choose a larger logo for each site.

      3) I would add a little slogan underneath or next to the logo that sums up the mission of each site.

      4) I would learn a little more about SEO and I would build articles (at least some of them) based on keywords (long tail keywords). I feel that you say in your website what you want to say. It's good. But we must also talk about what people want to hear.

      5) I would add images or graphics in some of your articles to make them more visually stimulating.

      6) The letters of the text are in light gray. They should be darker.

      7) Your articles are written in a journalistic style. It would probably be best to write them in a "web writing" style. I suggest you study the following book: https://www.amazon.com/Yahoo-Style-G...=1&*entries*=0

      Good luck!

  • Meta title and meta description are attributes that shows how your page appears in the Google SERP and they're hugely important. Write a attractive title and description and you will getting outstanding searches.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
    • [1] reply
    • I agree ... I couldn't find any meta tags aside from og:
you need meta description and meta title at least

I haven't read through all replies here I confess, but if I were you I'd start off with the obvious on page SEO things
use google webmaster tools, they will walk you through a lot of the necessary steps like submitting a sitemap, structured content markups, meta tags etc.

Also SEO your images, put your keywords in the meta description of your pictures etc.

      This can get you far.

Also, I can't say it often enough, use google + (page and personal)
if you share your content on g+ using your keywords in the title and description of your post you may rank in google search results with g+ post much better than your actual page does.

There's also bing webmaster tools. Though bing has just a fraction of the search volume you still should not leave this out.

You've also got a blog on the page, you could have a free wordpress blog where you publish excerpts of your blog posts and get followers and visitors to your site as well. Might also work in tumblr, though I am not as experienced with it.

  • Hey

you seem to still have the mentality of - Build It And They Will Come!!

you could have the best website in the world, but If No one knows about it, then It doesn't matter how great your content Is... WE TEND to spend so much time writing 2000+ words blog posts to get traffic, while Big brand websites only write 300+ words articles and they always get 100X the traffic that we get!

Why? because they don't rely on Content-building, they rely on Content Marketing!

If you want to get more Traffic, you need to start working on Content Marketing

Start reading some of the blog posts that Neil Patel shares on his blog neilpatel.com - he is an expert in content marketing.

  • Use Social Medias like Facebook (Group, Pages), Twitter (Hash Tags), Reditt(Sub reddit), inkedin (Group), Stumbleupon(Group),

Youtube(Keyword) and many more social networks are there to get targeted audience to your website.
  • One thing I would do ASAP is install an optin form on your website so you can capture some of your visitors and get them on an email list. Then you can email them updates to your blog, offers related to your niche, etc.
  • Well there are multiple ways to gain traffic. Best way that I have learned is to do solo ads.

Or, hire some affiliates - good part about hiring your own affiliate is that you only pay them once you get paid.

Third option is facebook ads and I would also recommend foruming as a free source of traffic. Experiment with these multiple ones and see what happens.

    Good luck!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I strongly advise you to run some paid ads.

Start a Facebook business page and run some ads on there, directing people to your website.

Trust me, if you want to really see the number of visitors to your site grow, then you need to pay for traffic.

  • SEO is a school, pay for it or learn it

by the way you need to change your mind and optimize your website to get traffic
  • Hey Tush. My 10 cents worth. Change your website header to show the title clearer, and add your tag-line within the header image. Make (or get made) a header image that fits correctly. (I can do that) When I see your website first, I think I'm on a hairstyle blog. You might try a welcome video for the homepage, that connects with your visitors and entices them to stay.
There are some good suggestions already about paid ads, and social media. I use instagram for example that posts to 4 other platforms at the same time, from one Ig post.
You can try articles on other blogs for example, as a guest writer, that allow you to backlink to your site.

  • If You're Counting On Search Engines Ranking Your Site To Get Traffic And Make Money, You Will Die Lonely And Broke

The number one difficulty I hear from beginning entrepreneurs is the difficulty in getting quality traffic to their website.

It's easy to build a website. You can go from no online presence at all to a flash enhanced, e-commerce-enabled website that can collect money for your wares in less than one hour. As of January 2014 there were 861,379,000 registered host names (give or take).

Imagine if brick and mortar businesses
    were more like the Internet.

    > Imagine a mall 25 stories that's about 37 miles wide and 47 miles long--roughly the size of the entire state of Rhode Island.

    > Inside the mall is a matrix of 8 foot by 12 foot booths.

    > Rent is $50 per year, so it's easy to get a space.

    > There are tens of millions of shop owners.

    > The mall has a centralized directory and the richest shop owners pay to grab all of the top spaces. The rest of the directory is ordered by an algorithm determined by the directory owners based on their own determination of what shoppers want to see.

How on earth would you attract clientele to your specific shop? What would differentiate you? How would a new shop owner get noticed by the directory?

This, my friend, is what you are up against in the online world.

There are nearly one billion websites today.

Everyone gets a URL and a computer monitor-sized footprint for a "store."

It is relatively inexpensive to gain access and start your own online business.

Search engines ("directories") are privately owned and limit your visibility on the web.

The problem with trying to get "ranked" by search engines is that it takes time to get to the top of the search engine directories. It takes very specialized knowledge and the rules are constantly changing. A website that consistently ranks on the top pages can get wiped out overnight when an algorithm changes.

You need to develop a SYSTEM to be able drive traffic to your site.

You will find that PAID traffic is the way to go...and you need to be sure they are REAL HUMAN EYES on your offer...not just a bunch of ROBOTS, or slaves on a click farm making 25 cents per day.

    All the best,

    Pat
  • No, it's really not normal, sounds like a nightmare to me!

As you've mentioned that now you're trying the keywords, so I would suggest you to go for the long tail keywords first, once you've ranked well in them you can go for more competitive ones. Which will definitely take a considerable amount of time.

To get some instant results for traffic you can share your posts on social media. However, you'll need a good standing there, to get some traffic to your site.

Pro advice: curate engaging content, images, infographics (high quality) to spread your message. Share them regularly on best time on different platforms (Facebook, twitter, Instagram), as much as you can.

And at last, could be the problem in your offerings, make sure your site comes in search for the right keywords. You can start by free giveaways like eBooks on different topics in your niche and build up your email list.

You can follow these tips to get some traffic to your site:
    1. Perform SEO on your site; especially go for the LSI.
    2. Make presence on all the popular social networking sites and engage with people to gain more recognition, loyalty and fan base.

Now, for your query regarding the content rich website; you can follow these:
    1. Analyze what your competitors are offering, and based on that level up your game.
    2. Just written content won't solve the purpose. I've seen your website; that you have already used some images in your content but you can do more. Go for posters, infographics or videos. Create magic with content!
    3. You can also make your writing style more engaging and interesting. For starters, you can read some blogs on blogging tips.

You can also read blogs on marketing like Moz or Neil Patel, it will give you a clear understanding of how you can make things happen for yourself.

Pro Advice: Create Rich content like videos and try to use touchy content showcasing yourself in your videos by doing this you can form an emotional bond with your audience.

You should have great content, well spread over social media as SEO will not give you much edge, it will only be beneficial in google searches, to connect with your audience you have to have a strong social presence.

P.S. you have lots of things to work on your website, some major problems are:
    1. No keywords
    2. No description
    3. A lot of Text
    4. Fewer images
    5. Minimal hyperlinking

and lastly, make a great logo which is important for your branding purposes and remove your hosting partner's logo from the title of your website.

Although this will no increase traffic but if you can focus on more long tail keywords than less generic and strong keywords your traffic will increase with faster ranking. Other than that you may not be using few great social tools like hootsuit and onlywire, do check them. Image and video marketing need to be more balanced and connected to the content. We are getting good traffic by doing the same in our site on SEO Course . We also use good quality paid Press Release Submission from time to time to give good boost in it.
  • Hi,
Fabulous question. I really like your site. You do have a great story to tell and some of the responses I think are fabulous suggestions. I would suggest adding a few extra videos to your site; including any complimentary YouTube videos as one other strategy. Some other basic SEO strategies will assist also i.e. possibly a few more internal linking; a few more bolding/italicised/dot points etc. will also assist.

FB is another avenue, however, bear in mind many people prefer not to leave FB to review websites; Solo ads is another that has been suggested, however, do thy research and know they numbers first otherwise you could spend lots of $$$ with little results. (You can research solo ad vendors via FB and you may be surprised by what is being offered compared with years ago.) Joining FB groups on your topic might be a great free method you could use because you have a lot of good things to say and thoughts to share which could potentially prove helpful to others who may also then want to review your site more fully, however, bear in mind the rules of the group/s when using your link.

You could potentially head over to WSO and pick up the WSO PR Dominator (which is web based) and write snappy articles or Press releases and include your website link on your chosen topics. I'll state upfront I'm still testing this system, sure will get on Page 1 Google, what I'm still testing is how long the articles remain on Page 1 Google at present; however it may be worth a shot. (One off payment and you can write as many articles as you like).

If your website is based on the WP Platform, I also suggest the plugin SEO Yeost where you can include meta keywords to assist. Also remember each time you update your site, you ensure you ping the site for the search engines.

Anyway hope I'm not stepping out of line and giving too many suggestions. Would really like to know how you go.

Good luck on whatever you choose. One final suggestion that has been given to me - choose two different traffic generation methods and master these rather than trying to do everything. Hence, if you decide on FB master FB and one other i.e. YouTube - master these 2 strategies first.

  • Go to a CPA network and get some leads for your site. It's the easiest way!
  • I would suggest you update your index title tag; "Soul Food For Real Women - Why It Takes an Incredible Amount Of Strength To Be A Woman"
That's not good out of a SEO point of view so instead use some keywords people would actually search for.

  • Nice website. However, you need to update your website. Add more contents regularly. Add CTA(call to Action) button.

And most of all, build your audience. Automation won't work anymore, you get penalized. SO get away from that. Go social media. Update your FB page, twitter, IG and pinterest account regularly by posting news or interesting stuffs or contests from your sites.
