Hi guys,

Can anybody give me a heads up on how I can go about automating a broken or invalid links check?

The problem with promoting affiliate products is that if you don't constantly check to see if the links are good, you can get some surprises when you least expect it. I've looked back after a few months of promoting a product only to find that the merchant has either let the domain expire or has used the same domain name for a related, or even a completely different product. In any case, it's not one I was promoting.

If you're only promoting a handful of products, it's not a big problem, but if you're promoting hundreds of them, you've got one heck of a task every time you want to do a check.

Does anyone out there know about some kind of software I could use to automate this task? How do people usually go about this?

I would really appreciate some insight thanks!

Interesting question. I'm sure there's a way to check for broken links, but how would you know if your second scenario was in place, and the links still worked, but the product was wrong?

I don't mean to be glib or sarcastic, but this is usually done by reviewing your web server logs on a daily basis. Check with your web hosting provider and see if there is a control panel with server stats; broken links should be automatically reported along with all kinds of other statistics.

Another idea is to simply run your URL through hxxp://validator.w3.org/checklink manually by yourself, or by directing someone to do this for you on a part-time basis.

Sorry, I should have told you that I'm using Joomla 1.5.14 and what need to know is how I can place a 'report broken link' button on the site so we can receive an email to know where the broken link actually is.

Eg. The user is reading an article and follows the link at the bottom. He notices that it is an invalid or broken link and is nice enough to report it. So he clicks on the report button ...but in a site with over 1,000 pages, we need a way to know what page the broken link is found on.

I have never heard of that application. I'll have to see exactly what it does. Thanks.
