Just found this infographic... and made me rethink and recalculate the money I would need to build my own marketplace website.

How do you make your dream money maker site if you're really not a programmer/site developer, nor has a sufficient knowledge of it? And you don't have much money to hire such developer?

You don't need all those bells and whistles to have a highly profitable website.

Also, if you insist you need those things, you can get it done at a much more affordable cost, at least so your site will be functional.

You don't need to spend a ton of money to get started on your site.

Derek Halpern was talking about that in this blog post: Why I Spent $25,100 On A New Blog Design - Social Triggers

But I'll highlight this bit for you here:

Many people glazed over the real problem. The problem was that this person was about to spend their last $4,000 on a website…

My scammy-looking design worked for Social Triggers for the first 4 years to the tune of millions of dollars. THEN I wanted a redesign.

And that’s good news for you.

You might look at your site right now and think it needs to be updated. You might think you need new photography. You might think you need custom graphics…

…but none of that matters in the beginning.

Get your business right first. Then go make sure you look good doing it.

Several years ago I read that the South African government paid a "programmer" 6M SA Rand, or around $380K for a new website for one of their departments. When it was online and accessible, someone took a closer look and discovered it was built on a readily available Wordpress template/theme with very little customization.

I think the costs are highly inflated. If someone purchases an off shelf theme all they need to do is post copyrighted content which one can get through good freelancer websites for dirt cheap rate. I would say max to max $300 is needed to publish any WordPress website of 10 pages.

The cost of the site is really going to depend upon what you want. Any time you put the word "custom" in with "development" start adding dollar signs and 0's. Something that looks nice and is high quality can be achieved with a premium theme and high quality images.

For setting up your website in wordpress require some money. Rest is all depend on you and manage by yourself.

I agree the prices are very inflated. The infographic looks to be one big plug for some of the top WordPress contributors to justify their prices.

Granted all of the mentioned make great themes and plugins. The big issue I am seeing is the multi-use themes and plugins that are bloated with options you will never use. IMO some of the best converting websites I have use minimalistic themes. Mainly the stock themes that comes with WordPress.

Content will always reign supreme over design. Just don't make it hard for people to give you money. I've never understood 2 and 3 steps to finally get to the cart or where you put in a credit card number.

It's a bit overpricing whereas you can find similar service at a cheaper price for Wordpress website development. Did you try outsourcing for a freelancer?

This infographic is absolute garbage. It takes no were near the amount of resources and budget to do half those tasks. Sure, development and design takes time at first (maybe thats what they are referring to) but it is much like riding a bike. The more you do it, the better you will get. If you are a novice looking to start and not learn, apologies for my following statements.

Learn 2-3 themes inside out and own them. Study design elements and trends (awwwards.com) and begin to realize minimalism in design and that less is more. It is not rocket science to design and develop a great looking website, it just takes time and practicality. The metric's used in this infographic remind me of someone who has a very skewed idea of the process behind what it takes to design and develop a meaningful website.

WordPress itself is FREE. It's all the other stuff that costs money. Hell, to get started, you don't even need hosting. Just install WAMP on your PC, install WP, and mess around until you understand it well.
