Feedback on my website?

Hey guys and gals, my name is Devin. I am getting "late" into the entrepreneur game and have had a lot of fun learning about marketing, growth hacking, etc.

I run a website that is a resource for inshore anglers here in Louisiana. It is located at www.lafishblog.com

There are things I have problems with, like growing my email list (it is only 2,500 subscribers and a get a couple every day) and keeping people on the site.

The site makes a revenue through apparel sales, ad networks and direct sales advertising.

What I am looking for from you guys is feedback in general as to how the site can be better in terms of creating revenue, capturing customer information (email) and turning them on to our other resources, like our podcast.

Thank you!

  • Spent 2 minutes on your site, never noticed anything about your podcasts. You might want to make a big sign that tells people where they are.

I looked at several pages: big blocks of text that scare your visitors everywhere.

Make stuff readable. Short paragraphs, narrow pages, highlight (bold, italics, color) important words, add images, throw in section headers... It will help with SEO too.

Change "Receive fishing reports" part... add a reason why. You assume everyone knows your fishing reports are better than gold. Don't. Tell them what's in them.

Example outside your niche, so you can better get the point:

    Get your mortgage reports.

Get your mortgage reports and find out which lenders are good for first time home buyers, which lenders are good for 203k loans, which FHA refinances, which for commercial investors and much more.

    • Well done Nic, A truly professional approach and result. The system does work
  • I just spent only two minutes and then I closed the site. The reason for that you have a popup sign up form "sign up for 10% apparel". I couldn't close that popup box to read the rest of the content. It kept sliding when I scroll down. I couldn't read anything. Now if you want to read the blog, you would have to subscribe first.. Bro this technique is good but its really annoying too. You could get some subscribers but most of the visitors will run away.
I myself and many others I'm sure, would really want to read the blogs first before subscribing.
So my friend, keep this in mind, the pop up box should be for some seconds or for minutes then it would be closed or atleast there should be a close button "X" but I couldn't find one.

    • Riztech, thanks for looking! That pop up is something we were playing with just today and is not part of the user experience.

We always provide a way for people to opt-out if they choose to do so.

Thank you for your feedback! This is golden!
  • Hey i looked at your site and checked couple of things. I skip the argue about the content, just a recommendation, make your website content more SEO friendly. Lets talk about the design - you should make free your homepage from unusual content because it will effect to your page loading time. Responsive and mobile friendly.

    • Nouka, thank you for your feedback!

You have me confused, what is "unusual content?" All content on the site pertains to inshore fishing and not anything else.
  • You can add existing squeeze page to your Facebook fan page and it will definitely help you to build your list (capturing customer information).

  • The lead magnet, you need to try new things and offer something amazing for free to get that boost in your email list. Maybe trying some social media like Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr (in case you are not).

    • I offer % discount on apparel for signing up. Is this not good? Maybe giving away free information is better?

  • Go through your website. within 2 mins pop up arises, which make me to close your website immediately.
  • Guys and gals, I have changed the website in the following ways:

    1. I have reprogrammed the popup to go away for five days when it is dismissed and to go away for 365 days if they opt in.

    2. I have changed the text on the homepage. I did not add photos for load time reasons, but will be adding a video later.

Question for you guys: Do you think I should get rid of the pop up altogether? I am getting sign ups every day but not as many as I would like (3-9). How can I maximize sign ups?
  • The site loads slow so optimized your website well.

To get more subcribers, likes and shares, create a giveaway or contest and require in your steps to your subscribe in your email, like your fb, twitter and IG accounts and share it to their friends. In this way, you can get more subscribers in no time.

    • Completely agree with you, Website load period is height, it takes too much time to upload and unnecessary pop-up arises within a minute. First go with on page and then think about site promotion.
  • This is my second time to look into your site. It looks fine now.
You should work on the footer a bit and on the menu too. I'm talking about the core articles drop down menu.
  • Personally, I would place the logo on the top left instead of in the middle. And I would improve the menu by putting more color and larger letters.
  • Nice website but need resize your logo and set up a better position and need to add a revolution slider using your website picture . So your website look will be gorgeous and more professional.
