Problem with wordpress pages

Hello everyone,
I've been digging around for quite awhile now and can't figure this one out.

When I installed wordpress with fantastico in hostgator and then installed a free theme I found online I was hoping that the look and feel of this would be like a website and not a blog. Static pages only.

I don't know how I did it but my first page, my main page is like a blog with a comment section below and than I have a link button to about me at the top which is a static page.

So, my first page is a blog style even though I checked static page in the reading section I believe and my only other page is a static page.

How do I change my first page and get rid of the comments area??

One other thing is the URL isn't only my domain name it has a /home page after the .com which is what I called my first page but I didn't want to change the url.

Thank you very much!

Mm

Just create a page, go to settings, go to reading

put a dot in beside " A Static page"

Then below that next to frontpage select the page you created..

    save..

Then if you want to remove the comments from that page go to that page and uncheck comments

I think I did exactly as you have said but I may have missed something.
I'll go and check it again.

      Thanks

Don't forget to hit the "Save" button at the bottom after you select the static page as mentioned above.

I have forgot to hit that save button several times in my hastiness.

You may very well be right on with that suggestion. I'm not sure what I've done but It did start working.
Now I have other problems which is in another thread.

      Thanks everyone for your replies!
