Cloud Hosting and Setup

Guys... do you host on cloud hosting or VPSes? You know, Digital Ocean, Linode, Vultr or maybe even Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform.

Do you use any web panels for setup and managing your servers? I have come to know a few like ServerPilot, Ajenti, Laravel Forge...

I just want to know the skill level we have in this group. Do share your experience.

  • I use a VPS hosted by Dreamhost. They have their own proprietary admin panel which keeps costs down. One thing I found when looking for a VPS host was that getting charged separately for cPanel drastically increased the costs.

    • Oh yeah .. I assume it is the CPanel where you want to resell the web hosting. That is the WHM/CPanel that is always costly.
    • I have an account with Dreamhost. But just a normal shared hosting. I am happy with that. My VPSes are on Linode and DigitalOcean.

    Mostly VPS are with ssh access so need to maually do all the setup .
    Have been deployinh php,wordpress,ruby on rails apps.

  • Of course, VPS is better in many ways. A2hosting.com and hostsailor.com are good at delivering VPS accounts in a quality manner.

  • When I was looking at VPS I discovered that a hidden cost is cPanel access added on top of the monthly fee for hosting. If you're good with the command line then I guess you don't need cPanel but I think most people prefer a visual interface.

    I ended up using Dreamhost because they have their own proprietary admin panel. Therefore the price they quote for hosting is the actual price you'll pay since there's no separate charge for cPanel. The downside is that you'll have to learn to use their admin if you're used to cPanel. It's not hard, just different.

    • I use RunCloud.io but you need Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
  • Use CWP (Centos Web Panel), its user-friendly and user to install control panel on Linux based server.
