Sharp text tip!

Producing clean, sharp text in Photoshop is always a challenge at smaller sizes. I've tried all the usual methods and I've never been satisfied. So I discovered the trick that follows. Many of you will say it's not necessary but show me any other way that works as well and I'll eat my (graphical) hat!

It's simply this: Write your text in an html editor (I use nvu), upload it, open the page in your browser, take a screenshot, transfer to Photoshop and cut and paste.

I agree that it sounds like a lot of work but I've got it down to a quick routine. I would never bother for text above 14px but for anything smaller you can't get better text than this.

I can get crystal clear 6px text with this.

Make sure your browser is set to Clear Type and test for the best text display. For example, I get super crisp text in IE but not in Firefox. I haven't figured out why this is but it means I always use IE for this method.

You can put the text against any background color or image. And use a borderless table to get the right dimensions for pasting into your Photoshop image.

  • myself, I prefer vector graphic, It is always very sharp.
  • I find that vector's don't produce the text well when I export for the web or pull them into photoshop. Obviously they're excellent for everything else.

    I think you will produce the same effect as taking a screen shot of the browser if you turn of the text sharpness settings (there's crisp, sharp, etc.) Switch it to 'None' only if you're trying to mimic approx. 12-14px body text.
