Hi I am a website designer and I'm trying to find the best, quickest way to create a site staging area without having to buy anything. Also, those of you have been at this a lot longer than I have, would you advise that a client sees their site from this staging area via a screen share or with direct links? I'm thinking screen share..and can you recommend a reliable and free one? so really theres more than one question there lol.. appreciate the tips.

    Hello, Please say again,

I think I know what your saying but not sure,

You mean how to show a sample of web design, so they can choose, before they purchase,
if so here is how we do it.
We have many demo sites, under main url/demo1

Or we build out many of the top style websites, that we know what people want, they are complete websites live, but we do not sell them, they are just to look at.

wait I see now, ok when in build out mode, we host most sites, so just show them screen shot, if need be of design, but I would not do this much, since you should have already discussed all aspects of design, and only show when complete.

So please explain what your trying to do.

    Thanks Rob.

Hi Rob. Thanks for your reply. Basically all I want to do is have a separate area where I am working on site before publishing. I'm told this is called a "staging area" then I can "push it" to the live area when I'm done with building it.
      Clearer?
      Thanks again.

        Hello,
Well as you know, we have a on WordPress a option or plugin not to show website, so under construction, but do not use the option to not index this site on WordPress admin, this is bad option, reason is, once you do go live, Google will still not index website for a long time,

So just use the plugin under construction, this will keep the new owner of website out until you remove it, so if you choose to build on on a demo domain, it is to much work to transfer website over to new domain to go live. that is why we do not use demo domain, we only use demo domain to show sample of theme, before they purchase.

Ok let me know if answered it right, lol

        Thanks Rob

  • WP Engine has a staging area that you can use to build sites out and have as many approved visitors (clients) view before you upload to the clients url. The nice thing is you can keep the site in the staging area to make revisions as needed if that is part of your contract.

Thank you, Charles. I saw that but I wasn't quite sure how to use it. Are there any videos or tutorials about it?

    Hi,
If your hosting company does'nt provide a dedicated staging area, it's best to create a development sub-domain on your main domain. For example, dev1.maindomain.com, this can then be password protected to prevent search engines from indexing it and allowing you to control who has access to view it.

If you are using WordPress and your hosting company doesn't provide a dedicated staging area, then you can use this plugin:
